THE HERMISTON HERALD, HERMISTON, OREGON
Klamath F alls— Indications are
that the potato acreage In Klamath
county w ill be considerably Increased
in 1931, as potatoes are the only crop
at this tim e returning an income
above the cost of production, says
C. A. Henderson, county agent. To
tal shipm ents from this county so far
this year are about 1850 cars, with
approxim ately 400 cars on hand, and
a large am ount In the dealers’ pos
session.
Considerable storage loss
has been experienced, Henderson
says, due to m echanical injury and
field frost, and an educational cam
paign for the improvement of hand
ling and storage practices is contem
plated.
THEATRE MOTES
‘‘L aughter,” says John Ford, "tones
up the nervous system, adds lustre
to the eyes, increases the vitality and
improves digestion. It fools your
creditors, reassures your landlord,
impresses your boss, and w ins your
girl friend. I’m all for it.”
So saying, the noted director put
the fin ish in g touches on his latest
screen offerin g for Fox Movietone,
"Up The R iver,” took a good laugh
him self and w ent home for the day.
For "Up The R iver,” which opens
at the Oasis Theatre next Thursday,
Friday and Saturday, is said to' be
the funniest feature talkie ever mndo.
It features Spencer Tracy, Claire
Luce, Warren Hymer, Humphrey Bo
gart, W illiam Collier, Sr., and Joan
Lawes.
A prominent Los Angeles news
paperman, after having enthuslas-1
tlcaliy praised "Mobie Dick,” the
Warner Bros, and Vitaphone epic of
w h alin g days, starring John Barry
more, and run at the Oasis Theatre,
Sunday and Monday, was asked to
sum his impressions. He wrote. In
part: "The best picture I have ever
seen is ‘Moby D ick.”
“It is by far the greatest perfor
mance Barrymore has ever given on
the screen, and the sweep of the p ic -!
ture Is epic. This production com-I
pletely covers the w haling industry
of old New Bedford, and in the nar
rative construction of this* great p ic -'
ture, American history of that time
has been marvelously interwoven.
"Another reason why I consider
"Mobv D ick” the best talking pic
ture I have ever seen is the fact that
it is the first period epic of sound
pictures, and the first great sea sto
ry actually recorded at sea.
"Still another reason why I think
so h igh ly of this production is t h e ,

fact that It is primarily a motion pic
ture and not an adaptation of a stage
