The strawberry root louse, a rela
tively new Insect pest In Oregon, may
be controlled by setting out uulnfest-
■d plants, says the entomologist of
the experiment station. When set
ting out strawberries It Is advisable
to dip the plants in a nicotine solu
tion if aphids are present. This kills
all the aphids that havle hatched.
The aphids winter as small, black,
thiny eggs that are deposited on the
under side of the leaves. The dipp
ing is done in the spring or In the
-all before the plants are set out.

Skim milk Is often fed to bull
calres for a longer period than heif-
ors, says the Oregon experiment sta
tion. A bull calf may be carried on
to eight or ten months of age, al
though ho can be weaned earlier if
fed good leguminous hay, or if he
has the run of good pasture In addi
tion to a grain mixture. As it Is
desirable to keep the bull growing.
It may be necessary to feed grain for
best results. A good mixture is five
parts of bran, four of ground oats
and one of linseed meal.
