A LOCAL CANNERY
Rumors of a cannery in Hermls
ton hare been rampant for many a
month but so far none have devel
oped beyond the rumor stage. Now
comes the news that the Farm Bur
eau auxiliary has been giving the
question some serious contemplation.
That an opening for such an enter
prise actually exists In the commun
ity is perhaps emphasized by the fact
that several interests have consider
ed the proposition before. The local
project produces a wealth of garden
stuff every year. It's quality meas
ures up to the best standards and
the quantity produced is such as t<
overflow local and nearby markets.
The auxiliary women arc interest
ed primarily In a cannery for horn*
use yet their vision extends to i
wider horizon and should sucres:
meet their initial efforts It is likely
that the enterprse might be dev el
oped along commercial lines.
The women on the local project
have aptly demonstrated their organ
izing and executive abflly. It wap
through their combined efforts that
the cooperative laundry came to de
velop from an idea Into an actual
reality. If the cannery Idea Is simi
larly boosted with the executive
ability of the project women behind
It, we predict that it, too, will be
come a reality.
Further thought on the subject has
been provoked by a letter from a Port
land man who has worked with s
company specializing in organizing
cooperative canning factories for
growers. The letter was addressed
to the Herald. As an answer to his
queries, he was advised to make a
trip to Hermiston to look over the
situation and his visit Is likely to
develop ntereating results.
Four more weeks and Pendleton
will again be putting on their little
show for some fifty thousand wild
eyed easterners. And the rest of u.~
will be there getting the sume old
kick out of It ourselves. *
