DO YOU REMEMBER
The Fourth of July celebrations when the parade was
headed by a horse drawn liberty car with the Goddess of
Liberty (one of the village belles) draped in yards of
white cheese cloth and her hair, which had been put up on
kid curlers the night before, rippling down at least to her
waist?
The “exercises” out in the park where the mayor wel
comed the guests and some young blood in a new plaid
suit and yellow button shoes just home from college re
cited the Declaration of Independence with gestures?
The speaker of the day in a grand looking swallow tail
coat who reminded the citizenry that they lived in a great
country with a great past, a great present and a great fut
ure, stopping in between epochs to wipe the perspiration

The ice cream cones, the peanuts, the candy, the crack-1
erjack and bottles of ice cold pop and bottles of other
stuff that made some of the fellows feel so patriotic they ‘
just had to get up and make speeches about it?
The fancy outfits the girls wore—nice white embroider
ed dresses with pink ribbon sashes, white canvas slippers
and cotton stockings and big rose bedecked hats that had
to have two hat pins, front and back, to keep them on?
The fireworks in the evening down on the river where
everyone went to see the Maine blown up and the Statue
of Liberty and Abe Lincoln and instead saw the Roman
candles and sky rockets because the fancy picture never
worked just right?

According to K. W. Farnsw orth,
county w ater m aster, the w ater level

at the lowest point ever recorded at
this season of the year. This fact is
considered a highly favorable condi

of the m oisture is being absorbed by
the soil, which should go a long way
toward helping crops make a good

With investments of $316,500 made by new families
who arrived in Oregon to make this state their home,
June led all previous months of the present year, accord-
ing to the monthly report of the state chamber of com
merce. The new families numbered 75 and they purchas
ed 5259 acres of land. The attractiveness of Oregon as
a home state is shown by the heavy influx of new people
during the past six months of this year. During this per
iod the state chamber figures show the number of famil
ies increased from 181 during 1928 to 307 in 1929; in
vestments by new folks have risen from $633,760 during
1928 to $1,122,725 in 1929; and acres of land purchased
have increased from 11,404 in 1928 to 17,903 in 1929.
The state chamber also reports that it has received letters
from families who will come to Oregon to locate during
the remaining six months of the year and they will have
$1,140,650 to invest in property.
