Meet the Boys
THE new Ford is a great car to drive because of the way
it holds the road even at high speeds.
This roadability is due to the low center of gravity,
the semi-elliptic transverse springs, the Houdaille hy
draulic two-way shock absorbers, and the low ratio of
unsprung weight to sprung weight.
Come in and arrange for a demonstration. You’ll find
this roadability feature of the new Ford as outstanding
as its beauty, speed, comfort, safety, reliability and
economy.
Perfect balance is a great thing in a motor car.

A Hobby That Will Pay the Rent.
(BY ARMISTEAD CARTER)
bird it is somewhat decadent.
I
thing fanciers are getting lazy, or
otherwise, they are not as patient
as the old timers that brought the
breed to perfection.
The great trouble with the Lizard
as a show bird 1 b , that it is only a
showblrd for one year. After its
first complete moult, that is after it
is a year old, it loses its beautiful
spangles, and each successive moult
it becomes lighter in color.
This
makes everybody on an equal foot
ing at the bird shows, as all alike
must breed new champions each
year. In some of the other breeds
the men with the long purses can
purchase champions and show them
year after year, but with the izard
this cannot be done. For this rea
son a true sportsman loves a Lizard
canary.
Great care has to be taken to see
that the young do not damage their
first plumage, as this is the plum
age they must wear at the shows.
If they lose a feather or two they are
ruined as show birds, the replacing
feathers coming lighter, and thus
mar the perfection of the spangling
and lacing, as the stripes are called,
in England Lizard fanciers always
put cloth round the perches of the
ages they are moulting their show
birds in to protect the plumage fnyn
coming In contact with anything at
all rough.
In purchasing Lizards It is neces
sary to get young birds so as to be
sure you have pure lizards. When
the birds are 3 or 4 years old, yoi-
cannot tell what kind of spangling
they had. At the present time good
Lizards can be had in England at
17.50 per pair, but I doubt if they
could be bought from dealers in this
country for less than $25.00 per
pair.
I stated above we are going to use
the Lizard esnary to evolve the
American, whose colors will be red.
white and blue. This counds like
a fish story to the uninitiated, but
it can be done, bigger things have
already been accomplished in esnary
breeding. It will no doubt be news
to many that canaries are now being
bred and exhibited In pure white,
lawn and white, blues and blue and
white, red and black. These In ad
dition to all the shades of green, yel
low and cinnamon. Blue fawn and
yellow has already been bred in one
bird. In my book on canaries 1
have explained fully the procedure
to follow to produce the red, white
and blue.
Mr«.
Harry Davis, Grandview.
Washington, asks: Could I take the
male bird away from his mate, she
la now setting three eggs, and mate
him with another hen. 2. Will the
hen raise the young herself? 3. Is
there any way to tell the sex of the
young birds whilst they are small?
1. Yes. That is the way I always
do. 2. Yes. The hen is fully capa
ble of raising her family without the
help of any mere male. 3. It is not
possible for a novice to distinguish
sexes in young canaries. When you
have handled hundreds of them you
get to be able to distinguish cocks
by their carriage and perky appear
ance, but you can get mistaken at
any time. The only sure way is to
wait until they begin practicing their
song, though young hens will also
try to sing occasionally, they do not
fully inflate their throat like the
cocks. By the time the young are 8
weeks old, the cocks will be trying
to sing, and can then be separated
from the hens.
This week I will discuss the Lizard
canary.
The Lizard Is one of the most
beautiful of all our exhibition breeds.
We are going to convert it into the
American canary. It already has the
stars and stripes, all we need to do
Is to change the colors.
In the Bible wc are asked the ques
tion, "Can the leopard change his
epots?” We naturally say no. But
with a canary we cannot be so posi
tive. The original canary was all
green, having spreckles of a darker
shade. By patient selective breeding
by Lizard fanciers, they have con
verted the green into golden yellow,
and the darker shade of green to jet
black.
The head above the lower man
dible. and the eye line, is clear gold
as the yellow is called, or silver in
the buffs. The backs and sides run
ning down almost to the breast are
striped and spangled, in almost per
fect lines. The wing covert and
flight feathers and the tail are jet
black. The breast is the same color
as the cap. The en semble makes one
of the lovliest of the canary fam
ily.
As singers they are very desirable
to those that like lots of sound. They
are free singers of the chopping
style. This style of song Is getting
to be the most popular in America.
Dealers are asking bigger prices for
choppers than for rollers, but the
roller will never lose Its popularity,
