“ To thine own self bo true, and it
must follow as the night the day,
thou canst not then be false to any
man.”
SUPPORT OUR BASIC INDUSTRY
It was in December 1927 that Uma
tilla county diarymen finally respon
ded to repeated efforts to establish
a cow testing association In this sec-
Ion of eastern Oregon. Now, renewed
efforts are being made to sign up
dairymen for the testing association
In the coming year.
Local dairymen are generous In
their praise of the work done by the
association. They speak highly of the
advantages— for the other follow, but
most of them hesitate to Join the as
sociation themselves. Their sspoken
reasons vary.
Some look askance at
the expense, others feel that they can
keep their own records by their own
systems.
Looking at the proposition from a
thoroghly businesslike standpoint, the
observing man Is going to realize that
official testing of the cows in his
herd serves exactly the same purppse
us an Intelligent system of bookkeep
ing In any other business. What arc
the advantages of testing to the herd
owner? First, It enables him to find
out just what each cow is producing
what she lg netting to the owner af
ter she Is fed. Secondly, It affords
the owner a valuable record for
breeding purpos s. Thirdly, it In
creases the sale value of the young
stock, and fourthly. It creates for thr
dairymen an unprecedented interest
In his work, which ufter all meuns
something In actual dollars and
cents.
To those who find the expense a
bugaboo, just look at these costs In
black and white. A herd of over 20
cows can be tested once every month
during the year at an expense of only
»5 a month or $60 a year.
The man
who is In the dairy business as a
money-making proposition will at
least give the proposition a second
thought.

If tli s Is to he i .e. ilaton'ti basic In
dustry then why not go into it with
the idea of making this one of the
best dairying areas In , the state?
Dairying like all other Industries has
been developed along scientifically In
telligent lines, and the man who re
fuses to keep up with the newest de
velopments Is bound to be the loser.
The Bast Oregonian carried a front
page news Item November 30 telling
the world that the entire county was
covered with snow. Pardon us, hut
when wag Umatilla county divided In
to two counties, or was this Just a
Jump at conclusions. The only snow
that hag been seen In Hermiston is
the snow cars carried with them. We
are enjoying sunshine, and golfers
were doing their stuff then and now.
llermlstcn Is located in the west cad
of Umatilla county.
