PAROLES REFUSED
IN CENTRALIA CASE
W alla Walla, Wash. — The state
prison board, at Its session Just end­
ed. refused to g ran t requests for
clemency for eight m em bers of the
Internstlonal W orkers of the World
who have been held in prison for
seven years on m urder charges grow­
ing out of th e A rm istice day parade
killings in C entralia In 1919.
Requests for clemency came from
pacifists, socialists and the Interna­
tional W orkers of the World as a
body, and also David S ta rr Jordan, in­
ternationally known educator. The
board has taken sim ilar action each
tim e the 'req u ests were made. The
men were sentenced to from 25 to 40
years each for m urder on April i, 1920,
and entered prison in June, 1921, when
the United S tates suprem e court re­
fused their appeal.
American Legion m em bers in the
parade asserted the International
W orkers of the World m em bers fired
on them as th eir parade passed the
International W orkers of the World
hall, and th e International W orkers
of the world declared the hall was at­
tacked and they fired In self-defense.
HOSS SECRETARY OF STATE
Governor P atterson Accepts H oler's
Resignation.
Salem, Or.—Governor P atterso n ac­
cepted the resignation of Sam A.
K oier, secretary of stRte. appointed
Hal Hoss to fill out Mr. Kozer's un-
explred term and then appointed Mr.
Kozer state budget director.
Mr. Hoss, who Is the republican
nominee for secretary of state a t the
November election, assum ed bis new
duties Monday. He will serve under
his appointive commission until Jan­
uary.
Mr. Hoss announced th at he has
appointed C. N. Laugbrldge deputy
secretary of state. Mr. Laughridge
has served in this capacity for the
past six years. Tom Raffety, head
of the state traffic division, and Carl
Gabrielson, in charge of the state
m otor vehicle division, also will be
retained by Mr. Hoss.
The first official aet of the new
secretary of state was th at of sign­
ing a w arrant In the am ount of $1,-
#09,001.43, covering principal and in­
terest on state highway bonds.

Washington, end his Shorthorn
bull calf, "King of Supremacy.”

there will bo the 10th Annual Horse
Show for which eppm rlm ately #35,-

noons—feature stirring high and
broad Jumps, sterling performances
by H arness Horses and three- and
five-gaited American saddle horses
as well as exciting six-in hand draft
team driving contests. During each
performance parades of prize win­
ning Livestock will be staged and
demonstrations given by famous
sheep dogs.

P rince Rupert, B. C.—Fifteen per

parts of the Mackenzie river region
has been wiped out by Influenza, Cap­
tain Vladimir Perflllef, head of a Phila­
delphia Academy of Science expedi­
tion, declared here after a sum m er in
toe arctic. The deaths among the na­
tiv e s run into the hundreds. Captain

In 1882 David Nightingale bought
a pair of shoes In John Dickman's
store a t Peekskill, N. Y., and then
left for California without paying for
them. Recently N ightingale returned
to settle his forty-flve-ycar-old debt.
He found the Shoeman had retired
from business, but was still living.
Nightingale counted out 84, the orig­
inal price of the shoes, and then $35
more, which he estim ated was the
