social w ork she h ad alw ay s ta k e n a
p a rtic u la rly activ e p a rt, d evoting h er
tim e an d en erg y to an y e n te rp rise for
g e n e ra l com m unty b e tte rm e n t. Be

local ch u rch and lodge w ork, she was

COOLIDGE TALKS TO PIONEER PASSES

AT PORTLAND
W ashington, D. C.—Speaking over
a radio and cable circuit 6500 miles
long, P resident Coolidge and King Al
fonso of Spain inaugurated a telephon
ic service betw een th eir two countries,
acclaim ing the new m eans of com
m unication as a g reat factor in the
perpetuation of friendship and peace
betw een them.

tunity to speak by radio-telephone
w ith Europe, Mr. Coolidge told King
Alfonso th a t with the possibility of
com m unicating with far countries by
word of mouth, ‘‘the danger of any
serious disagreem ent Is im m easurably
lessened.”
P resident Coolidge’s voice required
about one-fifth of a second to reach
the king of Spain, 6500 miles away in
Madrid. The circuit employed Included
wire transm ission from W ashington to
Rocky Point, Long Island, whence Mr.
Coolidge’s rem arks were broadcast
across 3000 miles of ocean to Cupar.
