NAVAL PERSONNEL IS SHORT 2349 MEN W ashington, D. C.—Although enlist­ ed personnel of th e navy will be in­ creased by 750 men during the present fiscal year through economies and ex­ tra finances, the force for peace-time operations of the fleets rem ains short by 2349 men. R ear Admiral R. H. Leigh, chief of the bureau of navigation, analyzed tbe situation and found th at an average of 84,410 enlisted men could be main­ tained through the funds available, com pared to' 83,560 last year, 410 of whom do duty in naval hospitals ad­ m inistering to V eterans’ B ureau pa­ tients. E nlistm ents of 19,385 men will em­ pire this year, and with 65 per cent re-enlistm ents 6785 will have to be replaced, along with about 9170 expect­ ed to be lost through desertions, court m artlals, sickness and accidents, mak­ ing a total of 15,955 to be recruited. The navy Is facing a shortage of 2718 petty officers and 2400 students are sought among the bluejackets for service schools to fit them for pro­ motion.
