Consolidation W ill Give Chicago Sec­
ond Largest Institution.
Chicago.—M erger of the Continental
National Bank & T rust company and
the Illinois M erchants’ T ru st company,
described as a billion dollar combine,
was approved by the directors of the
two banks ln separate m eetings.
The consolidated Institution will be
known as the Continental Illinois
Bank & T ru st company, and will have
combined total resources exceeding
$1,000,006,000, the official announce­
m ent said.
The m erged bank will become the
second largest financial Institution In
America, second only to the National
City bank of New York.
Capital of the merged bank will be
$75,000,000, surplus $65,000,000, and •
reserve fund of $10,000,000 for contin­
gencies.
Bishop Hartzell Dies of Hurts.

H artzell, retired bishop of th e Meth­
odist Episcopal church for Africa, died
at C hrist hospital here. His death was
due to Injuries received when he was
bound and beaten by robbers in his
