OPINION GIVEN ON
BANCORPORATION
Salem, Or. — W hether the West
Coast B ancorporation and the Oregon
Bancorporation, with headquarters in
Portland, are conducting a banking
business and therefore are subject to
the supervision of the state banking
departm ent, largely is a question of
fact rath er than law, according to an
opinion handed down by the attorney-
general.
If the corporations are attem pting
to conduct a banking business, then
they are in violation of the state bank
ing law, he holds.
If, however, they are merely hold
ing companies, owning stock in bank
ing institutions, then they are not vio
lating the state law, his opinion states.
It also was held by the attorney-
general th at the name “Bancorpora
tion” used by the holding companies
under consideration is not a violation
of the prohibition in section 54 of
chapter 205, la w s a t 1925, a g a in st the
use of the words "bank," "bankers,”
etc., as the p art of any business name.

sugar grow ers revealed th a t they not
only are collaborating with domestic
beet producers to obtain lim itation of
duty-free adm ission of Philippine
sugar, but th a t they seek a 300,000
ton maximum instead ot the 500,000

Meanwhile both republican and

the perm anence or abandonm ent ot
the present free trade relationship be

The situation leaves the domestic

become a big issue iu the next con

Portland Youth in Flight More Than
Houra.
Seaside, Or. — Jim m y R inehart,
young P ortland aviator, brought his
plane down" on the beach here wth a
world’s record to his credit and ten
gallons of gasoline left. The official
tim e of the flight was 16 hours 34
minutes 25 2-10 seconds.
R inehart's feat is the first officially
recognized endurance record for a
plane of the OX-5 class, the only mark
which he had to beat being an un
official flight of 12 V4 hours.
R inehart said th a t his motor was
working perfectly and th a t he could
have stayed in the air longer, but came
down with the last of the daylight be
cause, on account of the great crowd
gathered on the beach, he feared that
he might hit someone if he landed in
the dark.
