England consumes 5,700,000,000
eggs annually and buys 3,700,000,-
000 of them. Their hens now aver
age 100 eggs per year. Our local
poultry growers probably would say
that all of those English hens should
go to the pot and be replaced by real
producers.
The position of agriculture in the
country’s business is constantly
gaining strength, according to the
survey of business by Jerry Owen in
Sunday's Oregonian. The Hermiston
district has already become convinced
of the truth of such state of affairs,
but we can’t have too much confirma
tion.
This Industrial prosperity
hasn't been to us what it was cracked

February 28, 1928.
Dear Ebenezer Coathook:
My Mom says I may write to you.
I’m a going to now.
Did you know that all of us were
going to have a meeting? We are. It
is a Seventh Grade Civic league meet
ing. Did you know I was going to be
on the program? I am. I hope you
will come and hear me speak my
piece. It is “The Ride of Jenny Mc
Neal.” Glen Pierson is going to speak
a piece, too. His is funny, and mine
is real pathetic.
Did you know we wrote a piece
for ihe paper? I was elected editor
of the staff. Dick Martin Is assist
ant editor. Literary editor is Mar
garet Felthouse and news editor is
Eddie Bensel. Dick Hutchison got
the funniest part pf ail. His job is
humorous editor
How are the pups Tomales and
Obadla? I hope tin y are fine. Last
time you wrote you said ¿hat they
had been badly scratched by the old
cat.
I better be closing, but 1 surely
hope you will come to our meeting.
It Is on Friday. We are sure going
to entertain you if you come.
Your loving niece.
Marguerite Sunstrop.
As one makes the ascent of the
Ande» from the Pacific port of Mol
iendo, In Peru, following the line of
tlie Southern Pacific rallwuy, the climb
to the divide Is bruken by two great
steps or wide-spreading shelves of
desert or pampa.
On tlie tisst of these steps, about
two hours' steep climb from the sea,
and at an altitude of from 4,000 to
5,000 feet, are located Hie famous
drifting sand hills of Peru. The
plateau Is here about 20 miles wide,
ttie air thin and dry and no trace of
vegetation to be seen, only these
gigantic crescent-shaped sand dunes
dotting tlie pampa as far as the eye
can see. Composed of tine gray crys
tul saud, they gleam white against the
brown of the ticucrt, and tlielr horns
point toward the prevailing south wind
of this region. They are from 15 to
23 or even 30 feet high, 20 feet in
breadth across tlie thick part of the
crescent and sometimes 100 feet from
horn to horn. So tightly is the sand
packed that the feet of the horses or
nuiles make little impression on It.
These sand hills, called menanos,
travel with almost lmperceptable slow
ness, nnd when they threaten tlie rail
way track they can sometimes be di
verted by piling up blocks of stone in
their paths, otherwise the railway bed
has to be altered to go around them.
An analysis of the soil of this region
shows that it would be very fertile If
irrigated from the available snow fields
of the Andes, so that It Is possible
there will come a day when its deso
lute sand dunes will cease to be.
