Can you picture a folding of the
' earth's crust strong enough to lift,
( in the space of 25 years, an area the
; size of Greater New York to a height
! of 11,000 feet? Such an enormous up-
| henvul took place recently In the At-
: lantlc, according to Popular Science
Monthly, and was discovered by mere
accident.
Twenty-flve years ago a submarine
cable was laid across the Atlantic
ocean, passing near the British island
of St. Helena. When laid, I he cable
rested on the bottom of the sea, about
14,700 feet below the surface. Recent­
ly. when It became necessary to repair
the cable, It was discovered that part
of the sea bottom had been lifted more
than 11,000 feet, which brought the
cable within 3,600 feet of the sea
level.
