Their Fate in Mexieo
A</venfurar«
Sonora, Mexico, was the objective
of a number of filibustering expedi
tions prior to William Walker’s fa
mous Invasion of Nicaragua. In fart.
Walker was on "his way to Sonora
when stopped In Lower California.
The failure of many bold adventurers
to pick up bushel baskets of go|o In
California In the days of 1849 sent
them rampaging 1c every direction,
and Sonora presented a special lure
because It was an old settled region,
and marvelous tales were told of Its
mineral wealth.
Two Frenchmen of noble birth who
were stranded In California succes
sively endeavored to carve out an em
pire from this supposed El Dorado,
und both lost their lives In the ven
ture.
First came Marquis Charles de Pin-
dry of Poitou, who set forth with 2W>
followers and was murdered In his
sleep at Cocospera. Next came Count
Gaston ltaoul de Roussel-Bourbon of
Provence, who was executed by Mexi
can soldiery August 12, 1853.
It was a pity that De Rousset was
cut off before he brought his scheme
of empire to fruition. He was a fas
cinating type of the soldiers of for
tune, but he had a fatal weakness—
he loved all beautiful and romantic
women. The last one to receive his
gallant devoirs detained him until an
overwhelming Mexican force surround
ed his little army of 24« Americans.
After a valtunt resistance the Ameri
cans were defeated and De Ronsset
captured,
“Allons, mes braves,” he said to the
tiring squad In a clear, cheerful voice.
“Do your duty I Fire true—aim at the
heart!”
A volley cracked. Count de Rous
sel-Bourbon fell dead. — Adventure
Magazine.
,1 WHAT A MIDGET
SYSTEM MEANS
'Laborers’ Land” Beal
Meaning of Labrador
According to Scandinavian sagas,
Blorn and Erie the Bed discovered
Labrador about the yea.r 1000, a
writer In the Pathfinder Magazine
tells us. They named It Helluland,
land of slate or naked rocks. The
modern discoverer of Labrador was
John Csbot who visited It In 1497, the
year be discovered Newfoundland.
There are two explanations of how the
region received its present name. Ac
cording to tradition, a Basque whaler
named La Bradore settled In the bay
of that name about 1520. Afterward
the whole region came to be called
Labrador after the name of this first
visitor. But this account of the nam
ing of Labrador Is not generally ac
cepted by historians. The more prob
able origin of the name is as follows:
The name Is of Portuguese origin and
means "laborer." in 1500 Corterea!
took to Portugal a cargo of natives
from this region. Muny say they were
Eskimos, but it is more probable that
they were ordinary Indians. At any
rate, the natives seemed so well adapt
ed for laborers that King Emmanuel j
thought that he bad come into posses- ,
slon of another slave coast whence
slaves might be exported to the Por
tuguese colonies.
Hence the name
“Labrador," or laborers’ land.
