As anyone knows who has read that
brilliant but rather disconcerting novel,
"The Way of All Flesb," Samuel But-
ler was not a slavish admirer of the
Institution of the family. His own
life at borne had not been happy, and
we remember that in his “Note-Books”

mother and without descent."

Butler, no more than the rest of us,
could get along without affection. He
had a few close friends and was most

fred. What It was like can best be
