Cent* an Hour for labor
Dairy herds In Oregon that produce
less than KO pounds of fat In one
year give the owner only IS cents
per hour for his labor after other
expenses are paid. This conclusion
was reached after c three year sur
vey was made of Oregon dairy farms
hy the extension service. Cows pro
ducing more than 280 pounds in
one year paid the owner 43 cents
per hour for his labor. Systematic
milk records are kept by moe suc
cessful dairymen of Oregon. These
records show up he low producers
which may be disposed of.
a n d S e r v ic e
Dairy herds of fewer than 10
cows have an excessive labor over
head expense per cow, according to
a thret-year survey of Oregon dairy
herds recently completed by the ex
tension service. This charge per
cow decreased as the size of the
herd Increased. Smaller herds do
not produce enough to warrant as
much care In handling the product
as larger herds. Consequently a
povrer quality Is produced by the
n ajorlty of m u : nerds.

Permanent pastures are becoming
more necessary to Oregon dairymen
this year than usual, according to
Dr. C. W. Lawson, chief of dairy
departent bureau of animal husband
ry, Washington, D. C. Cows that
run on pasture require less high
priced feeds, while labor and infec
tious diseases are better prevented
and controlled where cows have the
liberty of a pasture. Seed mixtures
for the different sections of Oregon
will be recommended by the farm
crops department of the college.
