On one expedition—notable In my
memory because I was unaccompanied
by any other white men— I apled a
huge rhinoceros under a flg tree not
more than a hundred yards away,
writes Doctor Shelby, the big game
hunter.
As eoon as the boys saw that rhino
they grabbed up their loads, and start
ed on down the trail.
I decided not to kill the huge beast,’
and was about to turn In my tracks,
when he rushed me snorting and low
ering Ms bead.
He was upon ma before I was In a
position to shoot, so there was noth-*
Ing to do but leap nimbly to one aide. '
He pnt on the brakes and almost
stopped, then continued on down the
trail In the wake of the porters. They
were heavily loaded and would have
dlflcfllty In escaping, so I made up my
mind I would have to kill him.
I
As I raised my rifle he was Just
turning a bend 20 yards down the trail.
And, scarcely taking aim, I fired.
It was a snap shot for his body. I
fancied that he lurched forward. At
any rate, he disappeared around the
bend and I could hear him rolling over
and over down the trail, while the
cries of a dozen or more terror-strick
en natives rent the air.
I hurried forward. Around the bend
I found loads scattered everywhere^
Some boys had scrambled upon large
rocks. Two had Jumped Into a tree.
Some had Jumped aside. One of
these had been bowled over by the
rhino, which then rolled over him, but
luckily the boy bad fallen between two
rocks, which received the ponderous
weight of the beast Instead.
