THE STORY WE DID HOT PRINT
Last week there occurred events
that would have been the embryo for
a sensational and Interesting news
paper 3tory. It would have implicated
certain young man who lives near
Hermiston. When the story failed
to appear In last week’s issue of the
Herald a friend of ours asked us why
It was we passed up this bit of news.
We are going to explain the reason
why we did not broadcast tills arti
cle to our readers.
The day before going to press a
certain farmer of the project dropp
ed In the office for a chat. Dur
ing the conversation reference was
made to the story and the young
man around which It centered. The
farmer stated that the boy felt blue
and was down hearted over the ac
cusation against him and that he act
ed in the manner he did from fright,
believing the authorities were after
him. This belief preyed upon his
mind. Our informant
explained
that at no time was there a criminal
intent in the mind of the lad. He
had merely been the victim of cir
cumstances. He toid a straightfor
ward story to the authorltleR when
questioned, and they finding nothing
against the buy had turned him
loose. The man who contemplated
prosecuting has bropped the matter
after an explanation. If it had been
an older person the mere fact that
he had been exhonerated would have
beon sufficient to make them for
get. But with a boy it was differ
ent. He believed that the story
would soon leak out and all whom he
met would point to him with a fin
ger of scorn. His inexperince made
him look upon the situation in a
different light. It would have, in
all probability, broken the boy’B
heart if we had published the story.
There is enough thorns along
life’s pathway; and the burdens al
lotted to each as we Journel through
this old world is sufflcent without
any of us adding to them. Rather
let us help to make the rocky places
smoother or the burdens a wee bit
lighter.
The country newspaper’s mission
is not to bring sorrow or add to the
grief of any one. Some times it is
better to forget.
It was .a case of ‘‘when a feller
needs a friend’,’ and somehow our
conscience does not bother us one
bit concerning the story we did not
print.
Someone should present a geog
raphy to the man who was the author
of the article that appeared In a
recent issue of the American Maga-
xino wherein he stated that the Co-
lumHIa River Highway started at
Pendleton, Oregon, and ended at
Astoria, Washington.
