Bert Shaw returned Sunday from
Umatilla where he has been working
for the Shotwell Construction Co.,

out a string of horses to the con-

home in Arlington last Saturday
after a visit with friends in Hermis­
ton.
Jack Biggs in company with B. J.
Nation left for Valley points Satur-
day. Mr. Nation is contem plating
trading his holdings in this section

comfort by rail from New»York, Chi­
cago or San Francisco to Brazil. Santi­

observes the Scientific American
Magazine.
The scheme In Its entirety involve»
large figures and heavy costs, the total
length of the line being 10.118 miles,
which Is not so very far short of the
combined length of the three shortest
»f our transcontinental systems. It
should be understood that the enter­
prise does not. *nd never did. conienv
plate the building of an entirely new
system of that length; for much of the
route ia made up of already existing
stretches of national railroads. Tak­
ing New York as a starting point, the
line runs to the Mexican frontier, and
from thence through Mexico, Guate­
mala, Honduras, Nicaragua. Costa
Rico, Panama. Odombia, Ecuador,
Peru. Bolivia and Argentina, to Buenos
Aires.
Even today It Is possible to travel by
railroad from New York to the fron­
tier of Guatemala; hut from Guate­
mala to the Canal zone over half of
the line has yet to he built. The long-
est stretch of uncompleted line Is
from the Canal zone to the boundary
line between Peru and Bolivia, where,
out of a total of 3.382 miles, only MJ
miles have heen completed. Also thers
Is a stretch of 127 miles In Rotlvls on
which work has recently heen com­
menced. The line from Bolivia to
Rueños Airea, a distance of l.lWkt miles,
