XVII HERMISTON WINNER IN DISTRICT CONTEST ANNEX FIVE OUT OF THE SIX PLACES Local Orators Make Splendid Show ing In Declamatory Contest There were six places to be con­ tested (or in the district declamatory contest held Monday night, March 1*. at Stanfield. Hermiston was declared winner in (Ire of them, the sixth place going to Stanfield. Towns who compris the district and vied for honors at Stanfield iast Monday night were Umatilla, Stanfield, Echo and Hermiston. The local contestants are to be congratulated for the manner In which they handled their subjects. Each one displayed unusual ability in the art of public speaking. There was never a doubt in the minds of the audience at any time during the contest as to the winner, Hermiston taking the lead In the early part, and successfully defending this advant­ age at all times. Challis last Thursday evening, In the pres­ ence of relatives and friends, Mrs. Millie Deck was united In holy wed­ lock to Mr. Fred Hennessey. The vows were exchanged at 10 o’clock with Rev. Wann solemnising the ring ceremony. The bride, well known in Hermis­ ton. was charming In a gown of white canton crepe and carried a bou­ quet of pink and white carnations and roses. The groom, formerly with the Port of Portland, came to Hermiston last April, and has for the past year been a resident of this city. The rooms were attractively decor­ ated In pink and white color scheme. A wedding supper was enjoyed after the ceremony. Superintendent Churchill Visits the Hermiston Schools « Catholic Women's Altar So­ ciety will hold a cooked food sale on Saturday, March 31, at 1 p. m. The women will specialize in whipped cream cakes, angel cakes and roasted chickens. Many other good things will be on display also. At the last meeting of the Umatilla Home Bureau, by a unanimous vote of the member8 present. It was de­ cided to change the name of the club to "The Umatilla Woman’s Club." This la a federated club and every city whose federated club Is the main club, has a woman's club. Many things of importance were consider­ ed, and several things done. It was voted to purchase two bolts of canton flannel and make two dozen diapers for the babies of the Albertina Kerr nursery home of Portland. The club has done this several years. A letter from Will Hayg was read In which he thanked the women of the club for their interest and cooperation In hav­ ing better pictures shown. Chureh- 111, accompanied by County Superin­ tendent W. W. Green, visited the Hermiston schools Thursday. The purpose of the visit was to check up on equipment and to inspect the work in general. Supt. Churchill was well pleased with the way the work was organized and conducted. He com­ mended the high school on having a printed course of study. According to Mr. Churchill many of the high schools of the state have no course of study, and that many of the pupils have no Idea what they are to take next. Our present high school course of study was prepared by Mr. Day and adopted by the board. We are glad that the Hermiston schools sre doing pood work and that thlg work measures up to the stand­ ards as set by the state.
