Some years ago a considerable trade
was carried on between Great Britain
and Egypt in mummified cats I The
cat was a semt-sacred creature among
the ancient Egyptians and because
they symbolized wakefulness, stealth
iness and craft they were held to be
special favorites of the gods of sleep
and of the land of the dead. When
they died they were carefully treated
by the undertakers of that day, and
after careful embalming were buried
tn great vaults. The degenerates, or
more enlightened’ descendants of the
u ndent Egyptians—however one cares
to consider them in their attitude to
ward their forefathers’ beliefs—made
m erchandise of the mummies of the
cats, and sold them In shiploads to be
ground up and converted Into fertiliz
ers for ¡he soil. There wus found to
be no tru th in a story that human
rem ains were occasionally found
among the embalmed pussies.

The best w ater for an aquarium Is
from a river, stream or pond. Ruin
water which has been exposed for some
time to the air is also excellent, hut
the exposure must be of some length
to render it safe. If w ater Is taken
from a hydrant, it should first flow with
full force into a bucket, so th a t it may
be thoroughly aerated. Under no cir
cumstances ought pump-water to be
used, as it is what is commonly called
“deud," that Is without uerutlon.
If the aquarium Is to contuin gold
fish, or other species th at will live In
still water, it is unnecessary to change
the water frequently, especially if the
tank be well provided with suituhle
aquatic plants. Simply replace that
which lias been lost through evapora
tion from time to time. If care lie ex
ercised and the aquarium kept clean,
a complete change of w ater Is only
necessnry about once in six months.
It would be well to introduce nt first a
few snails and tadpoles, and then, af
ter two or three days, the fish.

How much Exle has become worth
since the first producer was brought
in on her land two months ago she
herself does not know. Only the offi
cials of the Indian agency, where her
money is handled, know, and they are
not telling it for publication.
Exle received the news of her fourth
gusher ju st as the carpenters were
driving in the last nails of her modest
new flvo-room bungalow th at Uncle
Sum decided to bulid for her down at
Fume, in McIntosh county, when oil
royalties began to pour in to Exie’s
credit. The house harmonizes with
Exie’s simplicity.
“In the fall I am going to study mu
sic and will possibly go to a finishing
school,” said Exie. “I am also going
to send my brother to some big col
lege. I want him to be somebody. I
am going to continue to make Fame
my home, no m atter how many mil
lions of dollars I make out of oil. I
have lived here since childhood and
riches will never tem pt me to move. I
am always going to stay u country
girl.
‘‘No, I don’t care to trav el; at least
not now. Some time later on I prob
ably will take a trip, but I assure you
th at It’s not going to be a money-
spending orgy.
“What do I want to be? I want to
be a farm erette, ns you city folks say.
I want about five hundred or a thou
sand acres, stocked witli sleek, pure
bred cattle, and waving fields of corn
and grain. Then I want a flock of puf
fing tractors, with this little girl be
hind the biggest one of them all.

Seven more wells are drilling and
oil men say the allotm ent should be
good for about forty wells. Indian
agency officials, even In these days of
low-priced crude, forecast an Income
of $5,000 a day for Exle within the
very near future.
And Exle Is about as rem arkable ns
her luck. Although she was a pauper
two months ago, her good fortune lias
made little change In her. Site Is ut
terly devoid of extravagance. True,
she wears b etter clothes and has a big
red-wheeled automobile to carry her
from Fame to Muskogee to get her
monthly check from the agency, but
th at's about all.
