P R T M E S MARY- L A N D had been made a pro prietary gov ernment, 1 n l i k e manner th e territory extending from Virginia to Flor ida w as granted by Charles II In 1663 to eight gentlemen as a reward for their efforts in his behalf. The name Carolina comes from the Latin, Carolus, meaning Charles. It w as not really named after Charles 11, but originally in honor of Charles IX, king o f France, by Hugue nots who built a fort near Beau fort In 1662. The fact that the Carolinas became later, two distinct colo nies w as due to chance. It hap pened that the earliest settle m ents located at points far re moved from each other. The first permanent settlem ents In South C a r o 11 na were about Charleston, while those In North Carolina were around Albemarle sound. The life In the two sec tions also w as quite different South Carolina w as largely de voted to the cultivation of rice * and indigo and the planters soon grew very rich with their large estates on which the labor was performed by slaves. In fa c t Just before the Revolution the population showed tw ice as many blacks as whites. In 1729 the government o f the Carolinas w as turned back by the lord proprietors to the king and there w as then formed the two separate province^. South Carolina w as the eighth sta te to adopt the Constitution, the vote of ratification being passed In May, 1788. Tbe Pal m etto state, as Booth Carolina Is som etim es called, extends over 30,989 square miles, and It par ticipates in the presidential elec tion to the extbnt of nine elec tors. <©br M cClur.
