Sierra
N evada*,
those lofty mountain* which sep
arate the State from California.
Most of the history of the state
centers in this Western section,
near the Sierras, and it Is here
. that all of Nevada’s principal
cities are located.
The first white man to cross
the present state was the Fran*
ciscan Monk, Father Gares, who
made hla way across the desert*
to California In 1775. In 1825
Peter S. Ogden of the Hudson's
Bay company discovered the
Humboldt river, which Is some
times called Ogden river after
him.
The next memorable trip
across the state waa that by
Fremont In 1843, when he went
to California at the time of the
outbreak of the Mexican war.
It was this war which In 1848
resulted In Mexico ceding a large
area to the United States, of
which Nevada was a part When
this was organized Into terri
tories, the Territory of Utah ex
tended to California. The West
ern inhabitants, however, were
left to their own resources and
accordingly organized their own
government. Resenting the at
titude of Utah they petitioned
to be annexed to California.
In 1859 the Comstock Lode
was discovered and Nevada had
Its own mining boom. Popula
tion Immediately grew by leaps
and bounds and in 1801 Nevada
was formed into j » separate ter
ritory. Later, pOTtions of Utah
were added and the lower part
of the state was taken from Ari
zona.
Petitions for statehood
were made but it was not until
1804 that Nevada became the
thirty-sixth state of the Union.
Though Nevada ranks sixth
in size with Its area of 110,090
square miles, it has the smallest
population of any of the 48
states. Between 1800 and 1900
there was a marked decrease in
the population due to the fairing
off of mining industry.

Carnival Festivities.
Carnival festivities originated In the
Roman Cnthollc countries of Europe,
where they were celebrated, especial
ly in Rome and Naples, with great
mirth Hnd freedom during the week
before the beginning of Lent. Mardl
Jrns (literally “Fat Tuesday,” so
called for the French practice of pa
rading a fat ox, “boeuf gra*,” during
the celebration of the day), or Shrove
Tuesdny, Is the last day of the car
nival. The festivities were first In
troduced into New Orleans In 1833, by
one of Its French citizens. Mr. Marlg-
ny, snd for many years they consisted
of promiscuous maskers roaming
through the streets of the city. Indulg
ing in various kinds of aniusementE
fun and folly.
Oldest Crown Jewel a 8«pphlr*.
Only a few of the early British
royal Jewels survive In the present
regalia. The oldest of these Is the
sapphire of Edward the Confessor,
which was. originally set in his coro
nation ring. It was burled with him
In his shrine In Westminster Abbey,
but In 1101 the shrine was broken
open and this and other Jewils re
moved. The sapphire Is in the croa*
on the top of the king's state crown.
Legend lias It that Ht. John once ap
peared before the Confessor a* a pil

the ring, which was returned later.
