Mrs. Max West, late of the child
ren’s bureau, has been secured for
the Farmer’s week nnd Homeseekers
confrence at O. A. C„ June 13 to 18.
Mrs. West Is a well-known authority
on child welfare and Is a speaker and
writer of note on that subject.
Left a widow In 1909, with a faml
ly of five children— the oldest a girl
of 13 and the youngest a baby of a
few months— Mrs. West entered the
government service at once, and in
1912 was appointed to the staff of
the childrens bureau where she work
ed until 1919, when she resigned to
go to the west to be with her aged
mother. The family is now living
in Berkeley.
“Parenatal Care,” “Infant Care,”
Child Care-Pre-school Child," and
Child Care-School Child,” com­
prise a series of bulletins which have
been wrlten by Mrs. West and dis­
tributed by the childrens bureau of
the United States department of la­
bor. The circulation of these bul­
letins Is now well into three millions.
A newspaper syndicate has recent­
ly enlisted the services of Mrs. West
to write dally articles for mothers
and answer their questions concern­
ing child welfare. This busy woman
Is engaged to give the course in
Mid welfare at the summer session
of the University ot California. O. A.
. cays it is very fortunate to have
secured her for Farmer’s Week.

A fine big crowd of young people
gathered at the Baptist church Wed-
esday evening for the organization
of an orchestra and a young people's
choir. The early part of the even­
ing was spent In playing games, after
hlch the business of the evening
was taken up. It was arranged to
have rehearsals every week under
their competent leader. The first
one being Tuesday, May 31st, at 7:30
m. In the church. Those not pre­
sent at the organization are asked
to be present at the first rehearsal.

present were served with Ice cream
and cake and after gathering around
the piano for an Informal sing, de­
parted for their homes feeling very
enthusiastic over the new organiza­
tion.
