western growers got the bulge on
their eastern competitors in produc
ing high quality fruit by superior
spraying is told by V. I. Safro, field
manager of the Tobacco By-Products
and Chemical company, Louisville,
Kentucky.
"The whole economy of spraying
throughout the country is based on
practices developed at the Oregon
station In 1908,” he declared. "Up
to that time It was not at all unusual
for the growers to spray his trees
four times in quick succession for
control of as many different insect
and disease troubles.
“To save this extra labor and gain
time—for often if spraying is not
done within a short, fixed period it
is wasted—the station developed the
combination spray. The first nico
tine, lime-sulphur, lead arsenate
spray ever successfully used was
worked out here.
“This new principal reached its
high water mark of application three
years later at Hood River where Iron
sulfid was successfully added to the
combination.”
Lime-sulfur got its great impulse
as a fungicide here through the In
vestigations of Dean A. B. Cordley.
‘‘This great standard spray, often
in combinations based on the O. A.
C. findings. Is In use not only
throughout this country, but in
Australia, New Zeland, South Africa,
and other parts of the fruit world.”
The station is likewise used as au
thority by spray manufacturers and
dealers, and its reports are funda
mental In spray study and applica
tion generally, Mr. Safo has observ
ed.

controlled by placing a bait near
the damaged plants, consisting of

Oregon farmers week, since many
farmers have reported through the
county agricultural agents that they
want It then, will be held at the
state agricultural college June -3-19.
The date was selected because It Is
a relatively slack season on the farm.
Roads are fine for motoring and all
nature is at her prime for travel and
camping. It will give parents of
graduates an opportunity to take in
commencement with formal gradua
tion exercises on Monday.
It suits the college program of
work, coming In between the regular
three-term summer session calendars
giving college station and extension
staff time for farm and home prob
lems.
This short and snappy session of
the college will be in charge of Dr.
A. B. Cordley, dean of agriculture.
The whole college staff from "Prex-
ie” down will join In making the
stay of the rural folk a continuous
round of profit and pleasure. Many
hundreds are expected to come and
enjoy it.
Farmers having land to clear may
be able to get a supply of picric acid
for explosives from the 12 million
pounds surplus now held by the war
department. The state agricultural
college has been asked to consider
the distribution of enough to last till
June, 1922. The acid is said to be a
safe and reliable explosive for land
clearing, and its cost to users will be
only the expense of cartridging and
packing it, with freights and storage
charges. The college Is now at work
finding out what they will be. If
the plan is feasible, distribution will
be undertaken and it is thought the
cost will be much lower than com
mercial charges. It will be distri
buted through county agricultural
agents. Announcements will be made
later.
