Careless Beeman Gets Dig
Seed, Chief Smut Factor
Treated seed this fall is the chief
factor ip smut coutrol on late plant-
ings, since the early rains have ger
minated the smut pores in the soil
so early that they will have died for
want of host plants. One pound dis
solved bluestone to each 5 gallons
of water, followed by a lime bath to
prevent excessive seed injury, is re
commended by the O. A. C. plant
pathologists.
Formaldehyde. 1 pint
to 40 gallons of water, is recommend
ed where germination is likely to be
prompt.

Faculty of Milking Off Fat Is Used In
Pushing Cows for Short-
Time Records.
•
i.
In pushing cows for short-time rec
ords, this faculty of milking off the
fat is used ; that Is. the cow is allowed
to freshen in very fat condition and
will test very high when her record
is being made two or four weeks after
freshening.
There have been cases
where cows have tested from two to
three per cent higher during this pe
riod than the normal test for her dis
closes and this test would be much
higher than during the last part of her
lactation.
