Nothing is difficult; it in only we who are indolent.—Hayden
Or wish you had next Winter
Maybe you don't notice it as much
as a stranger would, but the weeds
that are growing up along the side-
walks on Main street and on other
streets in our otherwise good looking
city, are a sight to behold. The
stranger takes one good look, and
remarks, “For the love of Mike, are
these people going to seed?"
We are going to have a good lock-
ing city, and it’s your duty as good
citizens to see that Main street looks
clean and respectable.
Nothing
makes a better impression on a
stranger when he first comes into a
city, than to see good clean streets.
Streets that are clear of weeds.
When one sees a lot of weeds grow-
ing promiscuously, it makes one
think that the people are shiftless
and of the “don’t care” variety.
We all know that the citizens of
Hermiston do not belong to that
variety, but the stranger does not
know this. The only way we can
| make him understand is to show him.
Consequently, the weeds should come
down. .
Now all together, get a hoe, shovel
and rake, and make a fine big bon
fire of these pests before Field Day.
WE HAVE TRIED TO TELL THE PUBLIC THROUGH
SPACE FOR SEVERAL WEEKS
PAST. TO ORDER THEIR SUPPLY OF COAL FOR THE
WINTER.
A FEW HAVE RESPONDED BUT THERE
ARE SOME WHO SUFFERED THE WORST LAST WIN
TER WHO HAVE MADE NO PROVISION FOR THEIR
COAL FOR THE COMING WINTER.
WE NOW HAVE A LIMITED SUPPLY ON HAND, BUT
NEXT MONTH IT WILL BE HARD TO GET.

WILL BE NEEDING COAL.
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE YOUR COAL IN THIS WINTER
YOU WILL HAVE ONLY YOURSELVES TO BLAME.
Following is the article:
After 30 years, the scenes along
the levee are beginning to resemble
when the Mississippi river was a
great artery of I passenger and
freight commerce.
Regular steam
ship service between Cincinnai and
New Orleans, via Memphis, will be
started next month. Drastic freight
rate increases have forced a return
to the river.
Proposed freight advance means
$1.25 additional cost. This ad
vance liable to come before
September.
LEARNING FROM THE LOWLY
Telephone or Call
The wiser men are, the more hum
bly will they submit to learn from
others; they do not disdain the sim
plicity of those who teach them;
they are willing to lower themselves
to the level of husbandmen, of poor
women, of children.
Many things
are known to the simple and un
learned which escape the notice of
the wise . . . Let no man therefore
boast of his wisdom, or look down
upon the lowly, who have knowledge
of many secret things which God has
not shown to those renowned for
wisdom.—Roger Bacon.

RIVER TRANSPORTATION
Tum-Á-Lum Lumber
The following article was clipped
from the Portland News, and has a
great deal of food for thought to our
own country. The Columbia river
is navigable from the coast to Lew
iston, Idaho. In the early days there
used to be a warehouse in Umatilla
which was a distributing point for
all of Eastern Oregon.
The new
freight rates will surely bring back
river transportation and a distrib
uting point will be located at Uma
tilla, where all freight consigned to
points east of Umatilla will be trans
ported to that point on the river and
on train from there to Its destina
tion.
