The coal situation in the United States to
day is rapidly becoming alarming. It is im
possible to secure mine labor. The car situa
tion is becommg acute and of nation wide scope
with no immediate relief in sight. Due to the
long, hard winter, coal stocks of both commer
cial consumers and industrial users are depleted.
The situation is most unusual.

A condition must be diagnosed be
fore it can be successfully treated.
The Unite I States Department ->i As-
niculture und the State Agricuitucl
Colleges made a farm home survey,
not for the sake of the survey itself,
out as a preliminary 10 the cure <f
H me of the disorders exposed.
For soni! tire past statistics have
shown that'an increasing number «"
farm families are moving to town
If those wh > left were surrounded by
conditions as infav ruble as some of
tl ose bro 1:ht out ia the survey, thei:
exodus is n.t surprising. The whole
bi dy social will suffer with the abon-
donment of any considerable number
of farms. On the other hand, if con
ditions were as satisfactory on the
whole, as the majority wrote of, it
is doubtfu whether'in the end they
will find themselves happier or more
prosperous in town than they would
have been if they had stayed in the
country.
In those localities the conditions
on the farms are such that the oc
cupants are dissatisfied, a remedy
must be found, for the farmer and
his family are entitled to living con
ditions which are the equal in com
fort and healthfulness of those he
would find in a town or city.
The Department of Agriculture
means to bring to bear on this case
all the curative power it possesses. It
asks the sympathetic aid of all those
other agencies which can be of such
great assistance—the church, the
school, the community organization,
and the press. Most important of all
is the help which the farm home it-
self can give, for our efforts can ac-
complish no great thing unless the
members of the farm families are
willing to cooperate.
