Figures indicating this situ­ ation have just been compiled by the registrar’s office. The exact percent­ age of those who earn every cent of their living expenses is 26. accord­ ing to registrar’s office, and 16 per cent more make between 50 and 100 per cent of their way. These statis­ tics. based on data given by every student in the university, bear out the preliminary figures indicated by the checking over of the first thous­ and. Of the men, 38 per cent of the membership of ally classes earn their own way entirely; 23 per cent more earn 25 per cent of their expenses, making 61 per cent the total of those who earn more than half of their ex­ penses. Only 14 per cent reported earning from one-fourth to one-halt, and 25 per cent contribute less than one-quarter of the sum required. One woman out of every nine en­ rolled in this university is entirely self-supporting. . The percentage of these is 11. Nine per cent more earn from half to all of their expenses, making a total of one in every five women in the institution who earn more than one-half of the money re­ quired to put them through college. Twelve per cent more earn from one­ fourth to one-half of their way. Sixty eight per cent of the women earn less than .25 per cent of their expenses. A large 4 5 horse power tractor, owned by A. . Barnes, was driven through the community Wednesday to McComas Island in the Columbia river near the Cold Springs station. The machine Is to be used for pump- ing water for irrigating the large tract of land that is to be seeded to alfalfa and wheat. The island consists of 600 acres and has been used in the past for pasturage. Mr. Barnes has the island leased for five years. There has been quite a little fish­ ing for trout at the reservoir lately. Some very fine catches have been made. It is hoped the trout fishing will last for some time as there is not always an opportunity for the sport here. The card party given May 8th nt the home of Mr. and Mrs. Callahan was a jolly affair, prizes being won by Mrs. Wm. Fuller and Mrs. C. W. La Barre. Thirty guests were pres­ ent. Music by Mrs. Callahan and daughter was greatly enjoyed by all.
