A Look at Mexico
(Contributed)
Mexico, with a population of 15,-
000,000, is more than 80 per cent
lliterate. Superstition and immor-
ality are interwoven even in the re-
’gious life of the nation. The abor-
ginal inhabitants, the Indians, and
the mixed race of Spanish and In
dian stock, are peons. The country
has suffered greatly from révolu
tions, famine and disease. Our
ernment has invested more than
5200,000,000 in the Mexican pro-
blem and the problem is yet unsolv
ed. She will be a source of cease
less anxiety to the people of the
United States until its national
thinking and ideals are brought to a
higher level. With all his great
wisdom and skill. President Wilson
has not found a way for regulating
the internal affairs of Mexico short
of military intervention and mili
tary intervention is not the estab
lishment of democracy, The only
solution of the Mexican problem it
the invasion of Christian preachers
teachers and physicians, the estab
lishment of churches, schools and
hospitals, in order to enable Mexico
to realize her own destiny of self-
government and the moral and spir-
itual progress.
The Methodist Centenary has
program for supplying these needs
Through this it is proposed to re-
store our property damaged by the
revolutionists, improve the accom-
modations, equipment, and teaching
force of our schools, thus providing
evangelical leadership for society as
a whole; co-operate with othei
Evangelical bodies in establishing
a Union Theological Seminary ir
Mexico City; enlarge our medica'
work to meet the physical needs of
the country, and by example teach
civic betterment; and furthermore
to insure expansion of evangelistic
work to take advantage of the liber
alizing influence turning to God foi
help. The largest public congrega
tlon in the City of Mexico. Protest
ant or Catholic, meets in the Me
thodist Episcopal Church.
In a very real sense this will alsc
be a patriotic service to the United
States, by helping to make of Mexi
co a “safe and sane” neighbor.
