Some of the critics of the legisla
ture may say that It fell far short in
dairy legislation. The oleo license
bill was reduced in efficiency. The
state market bill was shelved. The
appropriation proposed for inquiry
into costs of production and the
causes of contagious abortion and
other diseases of dairy animals was
cut in two. But the legislature did
take important steps in behalf of
dairy interests. The well consider
ed report by the joint committee
consisting of Senators Pierce and
Patterson
and
Representatives
Dodd, Edwards and Weeks recogniz
ed the high importance of the in
dustry as a state asset. The sup
port of the dairy and food commis
sioner’s office was increased. Dairy
cattle diseases and cost of milk pro
duction investigation are provided
for. Right of representation In
tests for butter fat was accorded the
dairymen. All these things are vi
tally helpful to the industry. In the
days of the past when the dairymen
lacked such organization as they
now have in the League such ac
complishments at one session of the
legislature would have been consid
ered impossible or miraculous. We
are moving forward. This is but a
beginning. The end is not in sight.

The "one horse shay" Is fast be
ing superceded on this project by
the more modern means of trans
portation—the automoblic. This is
very noticeable by the disappear
ance from public life of W. S. Boyn
ton’s faithful family horse this
week, caused by that gentleman
having purchased a five passenger
Ford touring car from the Hermis
ton Auto Co. for use in his business
as a house building contractor. Mr.
Boynton is loth to part with the an
imal, but as it is too expensive to
feed It and the automobile, he has
decided to offer the horses for sale.

One of the most subtle organiza-
tions in this country is known as
the Mormons, or Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints. This
organization has a membership of
about 500,000 with 1400 of those
in active missionary work. Because
they are a strong political force,
are against popular education and
are non-Christian in their doctrines,
they must be regarded as dangerous
to our national institutions. When
a Mormon receives a good educa
tion he usually drifts away from
his church. The Centenary pro
gram of the Methodist Episcopal
Church proposes the building of a
3100,000 church and student cen
ter near the University of Utah that
safeguarding influences may
be
thrown around the students, Also
the plan is to expend $209,550 on
equipment and maintenance of Mis
sionaries and other buildings. Thus
it is plain that to support the Cen
tenary means Indeed safety and re
construction.
