HERMISTON, UMATILLA COUNTY, OREGON, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8. 1919
EVELOPMENT OF LOCAL
ARID LANDS SOON TO CONE
When Uma Was a Kid
The half century mark passed on
Tuesday since the town of Umatilla
lost the county seat to Pendleton,
Just think of it, fifty years ago
Umatilla was one of the top-notchers
in the way of a flourishing western
business city, being the outfitting
point to which all cattlemen, horse-
men, sheepmen and mining men in
eastern Oregon and Washington had
to come to get their supplies. To
look at it now one couldn’t conceive
that it had once been a city of impor
tance—but it is coming back, and
that very soon when the railway ter
minal is again established there.
Steelheads Running
Henry Hitt is selling quite a num
ber of fishing licenses these days,
and incidentally his store and the
Oregon Hardware are disposing of
scads of fishing apparatus, and all
because of salmon having begun to
run in the Umatilla river and angl
ers are anxious to get one or more
of the toothsome steelheads. Quite
a number of fishermen from here
and the east end of the county put
in Sunday on the river.between here
and Umatilla, and several good
catches were made, one man hooking
a salmon that weighed right around
ten pounds.
