Alderman Harry Straw lays claim to
having put to sleep ten jackrabbits
with the first ten shots he fired in the
drive last Sunday. According to that
the genial Mr. Straw is a better rabbit
hunter than he is a duck bnnter, for it
is related that on one occasion during
the open season last summer he fired
several shots at one water fowl and
never even ruffled a feather.
Thomas Hurlburt, a rancher of the
neighborhood, returned Tuesday morn
ing from a trip that took in many
points in Western Oregon and a week
of recreation at Seaside. In speaking
of his journey ings, he said he was sur
prised to see the amount of road work
being carried on west of the moun-
tains, allot which made him ponder
over the mighty political pull the west
has over the eastern portion of the
state.

Candy and the Drink Habit.
- If any one doubts that candy will
cure him of the drink habit he can
easily test ft. The man who puts lots
of molasses on his wheat cakes at
breakfast will find himself gradually
forgetting to step in for his customary
drink on his way to bis work. If the
man who goes out between times for
liquid refreshments will go into a can
dy store instead and get 5 or 10 cents
worth of candy and eat It he will be
surprised at the effect, for It will not
be very long until he will have a box
of candy in his pocket or desk. It has
often been noted that in theaters where
candy is sold during the Intermissions
“going out to see a man" does not pre
vail to anything like the extent it does
in other theaters where no candy sell
ing is permitted.
Not one man in "
hundred knows why he forgot to "go
out to see a man” after be bad bought
a box of candy for his companion and
eaten a little of It himself for polite
ness' sake -Medical World.
And They Didn’t Parade.
In 1885 Dewey was at Malta In com
mand of the Pensacola Some of his
men on shore leave got into a street
brawl. An alarm was sounded, but
tbe men succeeded In escaping to their
ship. The British captain of tbe port
was on band next morning demanding
tbst tbe guilty sailors be surrendered
or punished by the American comman-
der Dewey expressed regret that tbe
sailors should have been so lawless
ashore, but said be could see no way
in which be could assist his visitor tn
picking out tbe guilty. The reply sn
gered tbe British officer, who said
somewhat peremptorily:
“You certainly can parade your crew
before me in order that the rioters

To the question, “If there were •
siege, how long do you think the sol
diers and civilians could live after the
food supplies gave out?" an English
paper answers: Science tells us that if
be can get drinking water an ordinary
man can exist for thirty days without
food. At the end of that time the ma
chinery of tbe body will not be spoiled
and can be brought back to Its former
strength by careful feeding.
About a quarter of our body weight
is fat. and It is mostly this fat that Is
absorbed as food during the period of
starvation. We can absorb and burn
up our muscles until 60 per cent of
their weight Is gone. We can do the
same with from 80 t 40 per cent of
our livers and digestive organs and 20
per cent of our lungs. Our hearts can
lose 10 per cent and our brains and
nervous systems can lose 5 per cent.
It will be seen that tbe more vital
organs—brain and heart—yield least of
their valuable substance for the life of
the body, while the less essential sub
stances—fat, muscle fiber, etc.—are con
sumed first.

Motorcar Rece In 1895.
In 1895 a few enthusiastic "horseless
carriage’’ manufacturers decided that
the time was ripe for a race. As we
look back at it now the contest was a
mechanical jest. The vehicles started
bravely and then stopped lamely while
their drivers made repairs. One In
ventor followed his mechanical wonder
with a team of horses. The winner of
tbe race had averaged the mad speed
of seven and one-half miles an hour.
His engine, carefully tested after the
feverish contest was over, was found
to develop an amazing four horsepower.
