T he HERMISTON VOL. XII H erald HERMISTON, UMATILLA COUNTY, OREGON, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10. 1917 GERMANS SHELLING RED CROSS STATION TO MAKE DAIRY AND HDD SHOW PERMANENT EVENT (f there is anyone who for a moment has any misgivings regarding lack of astuteness on tbe part of the Herm is ton Commercial Club, they should be esst aside from now on, for the meet ing held Monday evening by that organization for tbe purpose of deliber- ating on matters of vital importance to tbe onward progress of this wide awake community showed a good at- tendance and lots of enthusiasm from start to finish. Tbe chief topic of discussion was ss to whether Hermiston should continue to annually hold the Dairy and Hog show, and on motion being put to ascer tain the opinion on the subject it was found that among the large audience there waa not a scintilla of dissension sgsinst making the fair a permanent event. - After settling that question, they went further and cinched tbe holding of the annual show for all time to come by the formation of a committee to look nD a suitable site for the bolding of the fair, with a view to either pur chasing or taking s long-time lease on the grounds. Then another committee was appointed to raise money with which to fence the land and build cattle, hog and poultry pens thereon. It may be too, that ere the year rolls around, a stock company, to in clude ail farmers, citizens and others who so desire, will be formed, it be ing thè idea that with such an organ ization more interest would be aroused the fair would expand comparatively and include everything raised on the project, and the incentive would not be lacking for stock and vegetable raisers to come in competition from all over the county on account of th e larger premiums that could and would be offered if it should merge into a stock company. The club’s time was not all taken up Monday of this week witnessed the sale of another large block of irrigat ed land io this valley, when the First National bank sold forty acres in “Cottonwood Bend” in the Umatilla project to Christian Seitz of Echo. Mr. Seitz, who Is a wheal farmer on Butter Creek, purchased the land for the purpose of haying an alfalfa ranch that will give him plenty of fodder for use while working his wheat lands, and in furtherance of this he is going to get busy right away clearing and leveling so as to have the tract all ready for spring seeding. HES LONGING FOR LETTER FROM HOME There are two things tbe soldier boy wants more than anything else in the world—a letter from home and a copy of his old home newspaper. Tbe first brings him the love he craves, the other tbe news he longs for. Sun- dsy, November 11, has been set sside as a day when everyone is asked to write a letter to s soldier boy and to send him a copy of bis home psper. The home tie is tbe strongest that the soldier knows. Keep it intact. Help the Army and Navy Y. M. C. A. in chis respect. It is established in every camp, at every cantonment and follows or greets the soldier wherever he goes. It is the nearest thing to home be knows. A great national drive for 135,000,000 to secure funds to continue and extend this work will be made between November 11 and 17. Let the soldier know that you are helping in this for it means a great fie* ate German shell exploding on advance British Red Cross dressing station, spite the distinct Bed Cross flag which must have been seen by the German bombarders, the station was shelled until totally destroyed. Prop- erty valuations have lowered during the past twelve months some $20,000 Ie tbe town of Hermiston, and the rule being general that the lower tbe valuation the higher goes the rate of taxation, the council had to du some close figuring, with the result that by a process of retrenchment It has prob ably succeeded In making tbe levy siili lower instead of higher than Iasi year —ail of which will be good news to the over burdened taxpayer. Tbe water system Is now on almost a self-sustaining basis, and the cost of maintaining will be lower still when some needed repairs sre made to the reservoir and pipe mains, allowing the aldermen lo malte a noticeable cut on Ibis item In the budg< I. By ingenious maneuvering they have not stin e i the funds in any of tbe department-, but have bi ought the levy down to what is actually needed for road improvement, the water 83u- tern, payments on bonds, etc. A look al the budgut aupearing elsewhere In this issue will give the taxpayer an idea of bow much money it will take to run the city next year and tbe different departmentsto which this money is apportioned.
