This week the installment of the
serial story "Sheep’s Clothing” is
omitted. Our readers will find it next
week however as usual.
Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Burris, of The
Dalles, came up Monday. Mr. Burris
has a tract of land on the project he is
improving and spends Monday to
Thursday of each week here. They
have taken the Waterman ranch house
and Mrs. Burris will remain all
summer.
In order to take care of the baled
bay business for 1917, the Oregon
Hard-are & Implement Co. has this
week received a full carload of baling
wire. In addition considerable has al
ready been received in small lots.
Wire is hard to get and the price is
advancing rapidly.
F. F. Sharrard, employe of the re
clamation service at Irrigon, met with
an accident last Saturday In which two
ribs were fractured. While working
on a fresno he was struck in the side
by the Johnson bar. He came to Her
miston for treatment and to remain
until again able to work. Mr. Sharr-
ard is a brother of Maurice Sharrard,
former Hermiston resident.
Of the six boys leaving Hermiston
last week to join the navy four were
accepted and are now in active service.
Robert West passed as a second fire
man and Walter Beasley as third fire
man and they are now on board a
training ship. Clarence Carson and
Harry Todd went in as seamen. Equip
ment for this branch is short and the
boys were allowed to come home on
furlough with pay until called, which
will be soon. Ross Shaw and George
Caldwell failed on the physical exam
ination.
W. B. Knox is one of the recent set
tlers here, having purchased the
Kellogg ranch early in the spring.
Mr. Knox moved here about the mid
dle of April and at once started in
spring work. Getting a later start
than most of the farmers he had no
idea of making a record for early farm
produce, yet the family has been using
string beans for a week and the first
lot to dispose of were brought in to-
day. Mr. Knox planted a bush bean
and the plants are now loaded from
beans large enough to use down to the
bloom. He is very well satisfied with
having made the change and located
in the Hermiston country.

We are in the grip of the worst car shortage the
world has ever known—and getting worse.
Ninety per cent of all fuel shipments will be made
during the three summer months.
Next to fuel, shipments of silo and granary mater
ial will have precedence over all others—as this tends to
increase the country’s food suupply.
May we suggest that you anticipate your wants and
order your supplies at once.
We will be pleased to talk these matters over with
you in person,
