fices of ancient Samos were built dur
ing Polycrates’ time. When he died
the prestige of the island began to
wane. It came successively under the
dominion of the Athenian Greeks, the
Romans, Bysantines, Arabians, Vene
tians, Genoese and Turks. In the
Greek war of independence it took up
arms against Its Turkish masters. Aft
er peace was declared It became an
autonomous principality, paying trib
ute to Turkey, but being ruled by a
“prince of Samos,” who was a Greek
nominated by the sultan. In April of
1912, while the Tripolitan war was in
progress, two Italian warships entered
the harbor of Vathy and torpedoed the
Turkish "statlonalre,” which had been
kept there at the disposal of the prince.
During the Balkan war the garrison of
a few hundred Turks was compelled
by Cretan and Samian insurgents to
retire to the mainland, and at the close
of the war the Samians declared them
selves in union with Greece.
The little town of Tlganl stands near
the harbor of the ancient city of Sa
mos, where the immense moles con
structed by Polycrates have been re-
built to some extent. The walls and
the celebrated underground aqueduct
are the chief remains of the ancient
capital. The former, which clamber
over the ridge in rear of the city,
look like a fragment of the wall of
China. Thirty of its towers still stand.
Considering the age in which it was
constructed, the aqueduct is a marvel
of engineering skill.
The Temple of Hera, of which a soli
tary column alone remains standing
was one of the most magnificent edi
fices of ancient times.
Even had Polycrates never ruled In
Samos the island would have been fa-
mous, for here was born the great
Samian sage, Pythagoras, he who never
smiled, and who always wore a white
robe and a golden crown.

told a thrilling yarn of a storm the ves
sel passed through on a homeward
voyage from New York, says the Times
of that city. She left this port on No
vember 11 with 145 passengers for
Glasgow and ran Into a gale three days
out which blew with hurricane force
and raised mountainous seas.
The
sailors said they had noticed that Tid-
dies, the ship’s cat, had seemed uneasy
for 24 hours before the California
struck the heavy weather, and spent
his time in the weather fore rigging
meowing plaintively In the wind’s eye.
One very heavy wave foiled over the
bridge and put the steering gear out
of commission. Three sailors were
knocked down trying to get aft to man
the hand gear, and the ship had to be
steered-for several hours with her twin
propellers until the steam steering
gear could be repaired by the engi
neers. Another big sea carried away
a lifeboat on the port side and stove
in the side of the Marconi house, and
the wireless apparatus was put out of
commission.
The sailors managed to hoist the
forestaysail, which steadied the liner
a little so that the passengers were
able to get out on deck. Tiddies had
been hoisted accidentally In the fore-
staysail and could not get down .again
on account of the violence of the hur
ricane. The cat, according to Ben
Fidd, the bo’sun’s mate, expressed such
dreadful things to the crew that they
could hear him above the shrieking of
the tempest
It was a fearsome sight, Fidd said,
to see the black cat clinging to the
wire stay with bis whiskers stiffened
by the breeze, and cursing the ele
ments. Tiddies hung on until one of
the boys went up the fore rigging and
slid down the stay to rescue him, which
he accomplished safely, and was re
warded with several big scratches.
"Intercepted Letters.”
In the letters of Lady Bessborough,
a clever Englishwoman of Napoleonic
times, a story is told of a famous docu
ment called the "Intercepted Letter,”
a state paper captured by the French
from the English.
One phrase In this letter, “obstinate
fools,” was rendered by the French
translater “des Gentilhommes decides.”
This translation was ridiculed by
William Pitt in conversation with the
duke of Devonshire. The latter wit
tily responded : “It Is not so ill done;
there is some affinity between obstin
ate and decida, and most gentlemen
