PLEASANT HOME
“C a rried O u t“ Load»,
A cco rd in g to O rder
Not so many years ago a mining
engineer was sent to th e in terio r
of Mexico to speed up work on a
sliver mine.
He found prim itive means of
moving ore and sent in a hurry call
for several hundred wheelbarrows.
They arrived and were eyed with
a little d istru st by the m iners un
til the senor took one by the h an
dles— followed hy the mine foreman
with ano th er—and wheeled it into
the mine. Whereupon the others
followed.
Once Inside, they w ere shown
how to fill the barrows. Several
carried out these instructions to
the letter, until they had learned
the a rt sufficiently to be left to
th eir own devices
Then, with instructions to carry
the ore to th e w aiting cars, the
superintendent und foreman left.
Some tim e later th e engineer and
the foreman returned, expecting to
see g reat progress. Instead, they
found the men ch e erily wheeling
th eir barrows Into the mine and
filling them with ore. Then it re
quired three or four men to carry
the load o u t; two shouldering a
handle each and the oth er bearing
the rest of the weight.
They had not been tau g h t to
wheel out the loaded b a rro w s:
merely to wheel them in—and had
been told to carry the ore o u t!—
