A lthough friends of M. D. K ern
had been apprised of his recen t ill
ness, they w ere not prep ared to
learn of his death w hich cam e sud
denly at about 4 o’clock T hursday
m ornihg in St. Jo sep h 's hospital at
V ancouver, W ash., as th e re su lt of
a second stroke of apoplexy. He
suffered a previous stroke last S un
day and w as rem oved to V ancouver
to be near his son, Roy K ern, of
th a t city. He had ap p a ren tly r a l
lied from the effects of th e stroke
and was th o u g h t to be doing well,
w nen w ithout w arning he was
stric k en for the second tim e and
lived but a sh o rt while.
M ichael D. K ern w as born in
buffalo, N. Y., Decem ber 24, 1846,
and cam e to K ansas in 1870 w here
he took up a hom estead. He w ent
into the lum ber business in K an
sa s in 1887, w hich occupation he
engaged in for 32 years. H e cam e
to G resham in 1911 and organized
th e p lan t on the site of the present
Copeland L um ber com pany on E ast
Pow ell street.
He continued in
business th e re until his retire m en t
frbm active w ork in 1919, when he
sold to the Jones L um ber com pany.
In 1913 he built th e ir home on
South R oberts avenue w hich he and
his fam ily occupied until the death
of his wife in March. 1926. In com
m enting on his fa th e r's death yes
terd ay, Mr, K ern of V ancouver,
who w as in G resham m aking the
fu n eral arran g e m en ts, said th a t he
had never heard a cro ss word
spoken by eith er of his p are n ts to
each other.
T he deceased is survived by three
ch ild ren, Roy K ern of V ancouver,
H arold K ern of San F rancisco, and
Mrs. W. J. H ollenbeck of Tw in
F alls, Idaho; th re e b ro th ers, A lbert
and Ja k e of Buffalo, N. Y., and
