We are living In a new age. In
deed, every morning we might
truthfully say that a new world has
been discovered.
The new world of ideas expands
daily more than In a hundred years
when Columbus discovered a new
world. Tomorrow morning while
scanning the paper over our coffee
It will be strange indeed if some
member of the family does not say,
“How wonderful!" “What next?”
Who did not feel the rapidity of
the conquest of ideas as he listened
to Graham McNamee, that master
announcer of the National Broad
casting company, during the recent
convention at Kansas City? If we
say, “How wonderful,” what would
be an appropriate exclamation of
the wild man of Borneo or the
kinky-haired
negrito
of New
Zealand who might listen In too?
What would be the reaction of the
Chinaman over his chop suey or
the Finlander over his black coffee
and knackerbrod?
They all could tune In and hear
the clear, melodious, distinct voice
of Graham McNamee as with mas
terful skill he Interpreted and broad
cast the convention so that we felt
that we were not listening In but
actually sitting In. The very emo
tions of the speakers became ours.
When the vast conventions cheered
we cheered Involuntarily. When
McNamee Bpoke In a conversational
tone giving some Information or
touch of humor, we talked hack and
even believed that he heard us as
the party sitting by our side. We
almost believed he was glad to hear
from ub and smiled at us when we
made some wise crack. We even
believed he saw us and was happy
because we were where we were
and were listening In.
Television Is the next world to
be discovered. It will soon be here.
It has already been a success on a
small scale. When It does come
there will be one disadvantage. As
the other party can see us and we
see others, we will be obliged to
"doll up” before we tune In.
Indeed, the conquest of a new
world dally Is not an extravagant
statement. We must speed up In
our own Individual conquests or we
will be like the gaping, kinky Ne
grito of the New Zealand islands,
blinking his eyes and wondering
what It Is all about.
want to attend this kind of a party
today and that kind of a party to
morrow. They want a change. Yet
they don’t know exactly what they
do want. This Is brought about
because they have not had a com
panion. Because they have not
tried to settle down and make the
best of life since first entering the
business or professional world. We
mean when first they are through
with their education and are enter
ing into the world on their own re
sources.
At this point we would also like
to state that our observation re
veals that there are more than
double the number of divorces re
sulting from those marriages from
the age of 30 on, than there are
from the ages of 20 to 30. We at-
ribute this to the fact that after a
man or woman has lived 30 years
or more they have acquired habits
and customs which they do not
care to give up. They have both
taken on a certain independence
which does not promote harmony.
It is more difficult to “give and
take.”
We feel It is a mistake for the
American people to countenance a
continual agitation on not getting
married until they get older. It is
ruining the standard of our Amer
ican home. It is causing our peo
ple to become unsettled and to be
come aloof to the principles on
which the American home is found
ed. It is discounting the sacred
ness of the marriage of the Ameri
can people, which is the foundation
of our government.
Our younger people will make
mistakes and so will older people,
but it is much easier for the
younger to become accustomed to
the ways of their mate than it is
for the older to work together as
man and wife.
Why change customs that have
lived on down through the ages,
for some theoretical Bystem which
has not proven to be even an im
provement?
