Coolidge and Farm Relief Continued from pago 1 ucts are rushed upon the market and the price slumps. The farmer cannot hold out his produce for the best market. Said President Cool idge “I want to see them undertake under their own management, the marketing of their product under such conditions as will enable them to bring about greater stability in prices and less waste in marketing but entirely within unalterable economic laws.” This means that the farmer is to evojve from his present conditions and through their grange and cooperative or ganizations to carry the responsi bility of their own emancipation. It does not preclude the sympathetic cooperation of federal government hut it does preclude the violation of fixed economic principles with ultimate disaster. The emancipa tion will be slow. Cooperative marketing, storage to avoid glutting the market, avoidance of overhead expense, long loans at reasonable interest rate either to the individ ual farmer or to organized groups are prerequisites to the era of hap piness and contentment for the farmer. HAL IIOSS SAYS THANK YOU, F ltlL N D S Oregon City, Ore., May 31, 1928.— To the Editor:—Please permit me to express to you. and through you to the republican voters of Multnomah county, my deep ap preciation for the support accord ed tne in the recent primary elec tion. My vote in your county was gratifying to me. and I know full well thut 1 should not huve found so many friends hud it not been fo the endorsement of your news paper. It is an absolute impossi- liility for a candidate to contact each and every voter personally, and aside from that means there is only one other so effective. And that Is newspaper publicity. I had my campaign so planned that where I had newspaper support 1 depended upon it almost exclusive ly, although I did make ns much of a persouul campaign over the state as I could, in Portland, where 1 bud no newspaper support, 1 cen tralized my personal work, and by balancing the two succeeded In making a consistent showing all over the state. The reports appear to show that 1 was either first or second ill number of votes for this office in every county except one, and in that county I hud no news paper representation whatever, and «till not visit there. My success is a distinct tribute to thx Influence of the up state press. A number of my editor friends have been so kind us to say that their faith in me and their knowledge of my ability and Integ rity gave them something to work on, and whllp of course I felt that I was fully qualified for the posi tion, and that the press would not have supported me liad I not been, 1 know that the cooperation and support of the newspapers of Ore gon was the essential factor In winning the nomination. In times of elections, candidates naturally turn to their friends for support. Fortunately tor me, a great number of my trieuds were in tlie news paper business and their support was more Influential than any other group could have been. 1 was uoininuted without doubt as the re suit of the support of tlie news papers, hut I ni not a "newspaper” uandidate and there was no collu sion between publishers to put me over. Neither did my former con nection as an oflleer in the editor ial association have anything to do with my victory: 1 was supported In many instances by editors who had never been members of the association I am very grateful for the splen did majority accorded me. am deep ly appreciative of the confidence shown In me by the electorate of Oregon, and thank you most aln- cerely fur the Hue support you gave me. As secretary of state it will be ni.v objective to give the people of this state a clean, con sclentlous administration of their affairs, free from politics and showing every courtesy possible Very truly yours, HAL K HOBS. Republican Nominee for Secretary of Stale. MANY IH> HONOR TO MEMORY OF FRIEND The chapel of the Gates Funeral Home was filled yesterday with sympathizing friends of the sor rowing husband, who gathered around the bier of Mrs. Frances T. Stockton to render the last ser vices. Mrs. Stockton died Friday afternoon, June 1, ut Good Samar itan hospital after a week's illness from septic sore throat. The Rev. It. V Wilhelm, pas or of the Meth odist Episcopal church, preached lie funeral sermon. He pictured leath, not as a cruel monster so dreaded by many, but as a incans of blessedness into a life beyond. Said Mr. Wilhelm, “Death is thought by some to he the most terrible fact In tlie universe, which would he true if It were not for the greater fact of the Christ who lias conquered death.” A quartet, composed of Leslie Walrad, C. E. Rusher, Mrs. Elslq Cogswell and Mrs. Mary Welch, with Miss Amy Cooper at the piano, sang by request, “Jesus That Name Is Love”, “His Be the Victor's Name” and "Sweet Peace tlie Gift of God's Love”. Beautiful floral offeringa, the mute testimony of love, nearly tilled the room where the casket lay. The honorary pailheurers and flower bearers, members from the Silver Leaf Rebekali lodge of Port land and Mountain Chapter t). E. S. of Estacada, with which Mrs. Stockton was afllliated, were dressed In white and assisted in caring for the flowers and in other services. The pallbearers were J. R. McGinnis, J. E. liarrick, Lee Edwards, Tom Goodwin and R. I. Cluytou, ail of Portland, and John .McGinnis of Estacada. Frances Thede was born In Minnesota April 21: 1881, and spent her earlier years witli her parents iu Florida. She luter came to Port land and lived there until her marriage to Williuin L.
