RANK Chicken Thief Now Serving Jail Term G eorge D onaldson R ank, who died a t his home a m ile ea st of G resham S aturd ay , A pril 14, was born in Indiana Decem ber 26, 1852. L eaving In d ian a in th e sum m er of 1855, his p are n ts moved to Olm sted county, M innesota, settlin g near Dover w here Mr. R ank lived until the fall of 1912 when he cam e to B aker, Oregon, w here he resided for four year#*. He th en moved to G resham w here he resided u n til his death. Mr. R ank w as m arried to G ussie Demro at Dover, M innesota, No vem ber 5, 1898. Besides his widow he is survived by th ree b ro th ers and a sister, Sam of Boulder, Colo rado; E llsw orth of Dover, M inne so ta: F ra n k of Miles City, Mon tana, and Mrs. B e rth a W ilson of Dover, M innesota. H ea rt trouble, from w hich he had been a sufferer for several years, w as the d irect cau se of his death. Mrs. R ank left w ith th e r e m ains Monday evening for Dover, w here in te rm en t is heing m ade to day. To the quick forethought of Mr. and Mrs. O scar T horen and son W aldem ar may be attrib u ted the fact th a t a G resham man. A rden C raw ford, is now spending his tim e in th e M ultnom ah county jail for th e th e ft of four chickens, a saw, plane and two p lanks from the T horen prem ises late Tuesday eve ning. C raw ford w as sentenced to 90 days W ednesday in D istrict Ju d g e O lson's co u rt after pleading g u ilty to the charge. T his speedy dispensation of ju s tice followed the a r re s t of C raw ford sh o rtly after m idnight by D eputy Sheriff E arl S tanley who located him in his house n ear the fair grounds, afte r identification had been m ade by m eans of th e license on his autom obile, found parked n ear th e Mt. Hood tra c k s n o rth of th e T horen residence. Mrs. T horen heard a d isturbance in h er chicken yards about 11 o'clock. For some tim e she lis t ened w ithout arousing the other m em bers of the fam ily, but when she w as su re th a t the noise cam e from someone in truding on the p rem ises she called her husband and son and they all quietly aw ait ed developm ents. Soon a m an was seen to come from the chicken house and Mr. T horen inquired his business th e re th a t tim e of night. At first the m an w as inclined to be su rly and gave T horen the im pres sion he w as searching for bootleg g ers. However, he soon changed his ta ctics as T horen clt“d to his son to get the gun and they sta rted in p u rsu it of him. He did not try to en ter his p a rk ed autom obile by th e railro ad tra c k s, although he could have done so as far as T horen w as concerned, for a t first the la tte r did not see the p arked car. H ere w as w here Mr. T hief m ade his big m istake. He took too m uch for g ran ted and slipped home quietly, leaving the abandoned ca r containing his loot. A fter Mr. T h oren lost sight of his m an he got his own m achine and did a little scouting on his own ac count. finally sighting the m achine and the stolen goods. The re st was easy. County au th o rities w ere no- tilled and D eputy Stanley was dis patched to the scene. A lthough the ca r bore an Idaho license, it took b ut a sh o rt tim e to locate the ow ner. C raw ford was found at his home, ap p a ren tly deep in slum ber, and at first disclaim ed all know ledge of th e affair and w as indignant a t be ing charged w ith th e theft. H ow ever, w hen S tanley asked for his shoes and going back to the T horen place fitted them into the trac k s fcunC n ear the chicken coop, C raw ford saw th e gam e w as up and pleaded guilty to th e charge in co u rt W ednesday.
