An Idea and an Ideal
To Our Readers
S an ta C laus is real and he is not
real. He re p re se n ts an idea and
an ideal. As an actu al person we
know he is not re a l; as an ideal
he is th e m ost real thing in hum an
thought and experience.
S anta C laus is rep resen tativ e.
H e ¡a alw ays pictured th e sam e b u t
his p ic tu re is com posite.
I t is
your pictu re and m ine and th a t of
every fond p a re n t and relativ e and
friend and lover of hum ankind th a t
is superim posed to m ake th a t be
nign, jovial, friendly, generous face
in th e d ear old fellow 's picture.
S an ta C laus re p re se n ts the better
p a rt of ou r n atu res, th e best
thou g h ts and feelings we have, the
generous im pulses, th e unselfish
desires, th e purposes to do good.
T his idea grow s not alone out of
the fact th a t C hristm as celebrates
th e b irth of C hrist, em bodim ent of
hum an ity 's highest ideals, exem
p lar of divinity in hum anity. T here
is in each person a nucleus of
good. He has generous im pulses.
C hristm as affords an o u tlet for th is
b etter p a rt of m an's nature.
S an ta C laus, as we p ic tu re him,
doesn't look anything like our im-
m aginary pictu re of th e Christ.
Yet we see in him som ething of
w hat C h rist rep rese n ted and S an ta
C laus and C hristm as w ill m ean all
th e m ore to us If we put C h rist’s
ideal into them .
A fam iliar slogan is "One for All
and All for One.” L ike oth er slo
gans it Is suggestive but may not
bear too close analysis. It applies
in general, how ever, to th e Outlook
and especially th is holiday issue
It is one th in g th a t is produced to
benefit all and a ll huve loyally co
o perated to produce thiH annual
holiday issue.
It would am aze anyone not fa
m iliar with the processes involved
to learn how many, In one way and
another, a c tu a lly co n trib u te to
m ake such a p aper as th is possible
The Outlook herew ith expresses
Its h earty ap p reciatio n to each and
every one who has had a p a rt in
th e un d ertak in g . T his includes the
re g u la r com m unity co rresp o n d en ts
who not only in th is issue but
th ro u g h o u t th e year are ren d erin g
a valuable se rv ic e to th e ir com
m unities. T h eir neighbors should
ap p reciate th e ir effort».
It in
cludes the frien d s who have w rit
ten special articles.
It also In
cludes all who have helped th e
Outlook re p o rte rs in secu rin g need
ed Inform ation.
The a d v e rtise rs seek and deserve
a direct benefit from the p atro n iz
ing public and th e ir su p p o rt is
g reatly appreciated. We u rge th a t
