take over the paper on Ja n u ary 1.
“The Traffic M anager” Is the
nam e of a new P ortlan d m onthly
publication. It is th e organ of th e
P o rtla n d In d u strial Traffic club. It
proposes to discusB the shippers
problem s and to public item s of
In terest reg ard in g freig h t rates,
policies, classification and the like,
together w ith legislation and I n te r­
sta te Com m erce Commission r u l­

The P ortlan d Sym phony o rch es­
tra 's next tw o concerts will be giv­
en S atu rd ay of this week and Mon­
day of next. These will be the
first concerts of the P ortlan d Sym ­
phony society, follow ing the high­
ly successful 'engagem ent of P o rt­
land's conductor

of th e St. Louis Sym phony o rches­

re tu rn s to P ortlan d today and will
com mence reh e arsals Immediately.
Both of these program s will be
of the high stan d ard w hich Mr. van
H oogstraten

com ing to P ortlan d two y ears ago,
and has m aintained ever since. The
first concert will be th e th ird of a
series of seven S aturday m orning
popular concerts, and will be p re­
sented in the P ortland public au ­
ditorium next Saturday m orning at
11 o'clock The second of the tw o
is to be th e th ird of the series of 10
Monday evening program s, and will
be given in the sam e hall next
Monday night at 8:30 o'clock.
For th e Monday evening concert,
the P o rtlan d Symphony society is
bringing one of th e outstanding
pianists of th e day, E. Robert
Schm itz, th e F rench m odernist
com poser and pianoforte soloist.
Mr. Schm itz has been heard in
P ortland a num ber of tim es, but
this will be his first appearance as
o rch e stral soloist. He will p er­
form tw o pieces w ith the o rches­
tra . ¿lie Bach F Minor concerto,
and the rhapsody on U krainian
them es by th e Russian com poser
Liapunov.
With the exception of an o r­
