T his is th e first tim e, it is de
clared, th a t th is peak has been
clim bed in high gear. E ach year
thousands of to u rists reach th e top
by a trip on a cog-wheel railw ay,
w hich winds its way up th e steep
sides. This railw ay itself is one of
th e m ost in te restin g exam ples of
m ountain construction in th e world.
T he only autom obile route to the
top is a d irt road which to rtu o u sly
clim bs m ore than 1700 feet in a
little over eight miles.

turkey season.

All who have turkeys to sell drive
them io tin* m arket, sometimes for
tw enty or thirty miles, the flocks
consisting of as many as 10,000
fowl. T hirty men drove 8,000 tu r
keys 13 miles in two days. In a
drive of this kind, a wagon Is
driven Just in front of the turkeys
and a little corn Is scatterei to the
leaders to keep them moving.
Those th a t become lame or tired
are placed in the wagon and hauled
to town. At nightfall, proy'slon Is
made to stop under a grove o ctrees
wtiere the turkeys may roost.
When the harvest festival rolls
around, this T exas community pays
homage to its most famous and
profitable crop and celebrates the
end of H ip season with appro
priate ceremonies.
