Anyway th e federal tax reduction
w on't concern m any of us if they
begin at the $10,000 a year income.
S ecretary Mellon says m ost of
our excise taxes have been elim i
nated. Ju st a few rem ain, such as
excise tax on tobacco, autom obile
sales, adm issions tax and a few
stam p taxes. T hese he thinks
should be retained.
S ecretary Jard in e, to whom th e
m a tte r of a cablew ay to the top of
Mt. Hood w as referred for final de
cision. has decided to lay th e m a t
te r on the tab le for a year. In th e
m eantim e, he says, th e needs and
conditions involved w ill be given a
thorough investigation. T he pro j
ect had wide endorsem ent in Hood
R iver, P ortland and throughout the
state. Colonel G reeley, head of the
fo re stry service to whom the m a t
te r w as first referred , decided
against it. So for a w hile yet those
who reach the top of Mt Hood will
have to climb.
