COLUMBUS’ SUCCESS.
Colum bus Day w ill be observed
tom orrow in honor of the reputed
and generally recognised discovery
of the w estern continent. On tliis
day Columbus, afte r a venturesom e
journey of over tw o m onths across
unknow n seas landed on San S al­
vador, a sm all island of the West
Indies group.
T h ree days before, his crew s in
n ea r m utiny, he had prom ised he
would tu rn back if land w as not
sighted in th ree days. T he expedi­
tion cam e th a t near failure. If it
had failed someone else would have
in tim e m ade the discovery but the
re su lts in th a t case a re hard to
surm ise.
Colum bus visited other islands,
erected a fort and left some of his
men. On his re tu rn to Spain hi*
w as received w ith alm ost royal
honors.
T h at was 435 years ago. A short
tim e In the w orld’s history, but tno-
m entus have been the results.
C olum bus’ patlnce, hopefulness,
p e r s e v e r ence, resourcefulness,
should be an inspiration to ns all.
