The A m erican housew ife, who
considers th e m odern gas ran g e
one of the m ost useful and helpful
conveniences of her kitchen, owes a
g reat debt of g ratitu d e to an A m er
ican woman, Mrs. A iten S. Miller,
of B altim ore. Md. Mrs. M iller in
vented th e first cab in et type gas
ran g e 23 y ea rs ago.
„Mrs. M iller, who is essen tially a
home m aker, is th e wife of a man
prom inent in the gas business.
She gives th e sam e thought and
atten tio n to th e m anagem ent of her
household th a t her husband gives
to his profession. T he equipm ent
in her hom e is m odern and labor-
saving. It w as probably her k ind
ly th o u g h t for her help th a t was
responsible for the idea eventually
to m ean so m uch to th o u san d s of
other home m akers. One day, 23
y ears ago, Mrs. Miller w as su p e r
vising th e p rep a ra tio n of dinner
As she observed h er cook literally
floored before th e oven, it occurred
to h er th a t baking w ould not be
n early so h ard on th e cook if th e
oven w ere beside th e top b u rn ers of
th e stove in stead of below.
She invited h e r husband in to the
kitchen th a t evening and follow ing
d irectio n s he placed th e top of the
ran g e on an old k itchen ta b le and
lifted th e oven from its lowly po
sition to one of equal ra n k beside
the top b u rn ers. The M iller house
hold w as delighted w ith th e new
arran g em en t. So w ere frien d s of
the fam ily who im m ediately w an t
ed a ran g e like it. Colonel Miller,
who was th e vice p resid en t and
g eneral m an ag er of th e gas com
pany in B altim ore, ordered 12
ran g es like Mrs. M iller's These
w ere th e first cabinet ran g es m an
ufactured.
No profit for th is invention has
ever accrued to Mrs. M iller, for the
idea w as not patented b ut w as of
fered freely to the m an u fa ctu re rs
of gas ran g es. T he nicety of
enam el finish and th e conveniences
of heat reg u la to rs have been added,
b ut th e model o riginated in Mrs.
M iller’s k itchen so m any y ears ago
con tin u es to be one of th e m ost
popular in use today.
