Hood R iver Legion P o st in 1931 and w hich h as become nationally
know n in m o u ntaineering and Legion circles, sev eral unique featu res
w ill be added th is year.
The asce n t of the peak will be held on S atu rd ay , and on Sunday,
w hen p a rtie s w ill be escorted to glacial ice and snow fields, the
L egionaires w ill stage a race to th e top of Mount Hood and back and
hold a ski jum ping con test on C oalm an's Scoot, n a tu ra l ski ru n on th e
n o rth side of th e peak.
T he C rag R ats, m o u n tain eerin g organization, whose m em bers won
note in th e discovery la st year of Jack ie S trong, lost on th e rugged
southw est slopes of Hood, and th e first of th is y ear rescued Calvin
W hite from a w inter blizzard on Hood, w ill guide th e sum m it and
glacier p arties.
E xcept for a fee of $2 to be charged those essaying th e sum m it
trip , in o rd er to provide a fund for the p u rch ase of ropes and to pro-
vide oth er accesso ries for safety and com fort of clim bers, every s e r­
vice of the Legion P o st th is y ear will be provided free of charge.
T he Hood R iver P o st in a u g u rated the Mount Hood Climb, in order
to popularize m o u n tain eerin g am ong the folk of Oregon, and a cordial
