Miss Edna Shoem aker, for 10
years a m issionary of the B aptist

society
in
China, died at the home of her sis
ter, Mrs. W. C. G unther, in P o rt
land early T hursday m orning, after
several m onths of intense suffering
from cancer, w hich sta rted back of
one of her eyes, the sig h t of which
she lost follow ing an operation
about six m onths ago. Miss Shoe
m aker was brought home from
China in the ca re of a nurse, a r
riv in g in December, and spent a
p a rt of the tim e in G resham w ith
h er m other, Mrs. Mary Shoem aker.
She w as taken to th e home, of her
sister about th ree weeks ago.
Miss Shoem aker’s death is felt as
a d istin ct loss not only by her Im
m ediate fam ily and friends but by
th e m issionary force, In w hich she
w as a leader. H er w ork for a num
ber of years had been at Huchow,
China, w here she headed a system
of schools for girls covering a
larg e area In and n ear Huchow.
She w as unusually w ell equipped
m entally and sp iritu a lly for the
work, to w hich she had devoted her
life.
