One Secret ol Good Health.
One of th e m ost essen tial condi
tions for developing a healthy body
is an ab u n d an t supply of fresh out-
I door air. F or those who are con-
’ fined by th e ir work in buildings
which lim it air supply it is im port-
1 an t for them to sleep outdoors,
.s a y s th e _ Oregon sta te board of
I health.
N early all room s are kept at too
high a tem p eratu re. In addition,
th ere is never enough m oisture
present and the air is not kept in
motion. The four req u isites of good
ventilation are m otion, coolness,
proper hum idity, aud a continuous
supply of fresh air. A te m p eratu re
of 68 degrees or 70 degrees F. gives
th e best resu lts.
D ust should be prevented from
getting into th e air as far as pos
sible. T his is best accom plished
by using a vacuum clean er, aud by
using «lamp, or b etter, oiled cloths
for dusting. A rticles of fu rn itu re
which perm it th e collection of
large q u an tities of d u st a re not
sa n itary . Rugs a re b etter th an c a r
pets since they may be readily ta k
en up and cleaned.
S u nlight should be abu n d an t, as
b acteria are soon killed when ex
posed to it. The best resu lts are
obtained when w indows a re left
open since some of th e light rays
are rendered ineffective when they
come in co n tact w ith glass. D ark
room s favor u ncleanliness, and
this condition is usually accom
panied by lack of ventilation.
M oderately dry a ir is to be p re
ferred tp th a t w hich is hum id;
how ever, hum id a ir is b e tte r th an

the
popular prejudice to the co n trary .
T he p ractice of deep breath in g
should be developed by everyone.
For th o se who are indoors a large
p art of th e tim e a dozen or more
deep b rea th s of outside a ir should
be tak en sy stem atically several
tim es a day. F orced deep b re a th
ing is not as effective as slow deep
rhythm ic b rea th in g and som etim s
it is h arm fu l. Slow deep breath in g
rem oves some of th e resid u al air
in th e lungs and rep laces it w ith
fresh air. At the sam e tim e, the
circu latio n , not only of th e lungs
but in th e abdom en and other
p a rts of the body, is likew ise stim

H aving ju s t retu rn ed from a
visit to th e sta te h ealth d e p a rt
m ents of the sta te s of New Jersey,
New York, P ennsylvania, M ichi
gan, Iowa, K ansas, Colorado and
Utah, I am pleased to rep o rt th a t
rapid advances a re being m ade in
the cam paign for com m unicable
ilisease prevention, says Dr. S tric k
er of th e S tate Board of H ealth. In
every sta te w here they are im m u
nizing children ag ain st d iphtheria,
th e re is a g reat reduction in the
num ber of cases anil death s from
diphtheria. The ta sk of p rev en t
ing sc a rle t fever is also receiving
increasin g attention.
In one of our w eekly le tte rs it
was predicted th a t m easles would
soon fall under the head of the
co n tro llab le diseases. T his p re
diction seem s about to be fulfilled.
The claim is now m ade that
m easles is caused by the stre p to
coccus v irid an s m orbilli,
T his
m eans th a t a ch ain -lik e organism
producing green grow th on c u l
tu re m edia is the cau se of one of
the m ost common com m unicable
diseases, m easles. T he germ has
been isolated in a p ure cu ltu re
from the blood of p atien ts in the
early stages of th e disease. It is a
sm all green-producing strep to co c
cus w hich form s a soluble poison
or toxin specific to m easles. The
toxin was found in b roth filtrates
of th e organism .
P roof ol the
germ being the cause of m easles
was d em onstrated by experim ents
on persons susceptible and those
im m une to m easles as well M on
persons suffering w ith the disease,
also on rab b its and o th er anim als.
Sm all doses of th is poison a p
plied to th e skin of p ersons who
have not had m easles give a c h a r
a c te ristic skin reaction. P ersons
who have had th e disease or have
been imm unized ag a in st m easles,
give no reaction. If th is w ork Is
confirm ed this will give us a test
for susceptibility to m easles the
same as the Dick and Si hick te sts
for scarlet fever and d ip h th eria re
spectively.
The poison or toxin w hen Inject
ed in increasin g doses in certain
anim als produces au
antitoxin
which n eu tralizes th is poison or
toxin and cu res th e diseases. All
this work is still In the ex p erim en t

to determ in e the sm allest dose of
the toxin necessary to produce the
skin reaction.
